EDUCATION MINISTER VINCE HENDERSON RELECTS ON THE WORDS OF THE LATE GREAT HENKEL CHRISTIAN

Roseau, Dominica – October 24, 2008……….On the first anniversary of the formal opening of the Windsor Park Stadium on Friday, October 24, 2008, Minister for Education, Hon. Vince Henderson used the occasion of the 2008 National Youth Rally at the Windsor Park to call on Dominicans to remember the words of the late great Mr. Henkel Christian in a speech he delivered on           November 3rd 1978- the date Dominica gained political independence from Britain.

Roseau, Dominica – October 22,  2008……….Executive Chairman of the National Reunion 2008 Committee, Mr. Hubert Charles, used the opening of a three(3) day Reunion Development Conference on Tuesday to examine the journey Dominica has travelled in the 30 years since the country attained nationhood.

GOVERNMENT TAX REFORM PROGRAMME ENTERS SECOND PHASE

Parliament approves Income Tax (Amendment) Act 2008

 

Roseau, Dominica – October 20, 2008…… The Tax Reform programme of the Government of Dominica has entered the second phase with the passage in Parliament last week of the Income Tax (Amendment) Act 2008.

 

In the 2007/2008 Budget Address, Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit announced the first phase of a comprehensive income tax adjustment programme, to be implemented over a three year period. As a result of that adjustment an additional 1,036 persons in Dominica  stopped paying income tax.

DOMINICA CABINET MEETS TO ADDRESS THE EFFECTS OF HURRICANE OMAR

Government approves initial amount of $3 million for fisheries sub-sector including an amount of $250 per week for one month for fisherfolk

 

Roseau, Dominica – October 17, 2008…… The Government of Dominica has moved swiftly to deal with the effects of Hurricane Omar which triggered huge waves and sea swells yesterday, effecting widespread damage to roads and other  infrastructure along the west coast of the island, inter island vessels and the boats and other equipment of local  fisherfolk.

 

Based on information provided by the Minister with responsibility for Fisheries, Hon. Matthew Walter, one hundred and fifty-three (153) boats have been severely damaged or lost and fisherfolk suffered damage to their engines, outboard motors, boat houses, fish aggregating devices(FADS) and other equipment. Five hundred (500) fisherfolk were affected.

DOMINICA FORGING AHEAD WITH GEOTHERMAL RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT

Roseau, Dominica – October 17, 2008……. The Government of Dominica in collaboration with the European Union, The Regional Council of Guadeloupe, the Agence Francaise de Developpement and other French development partners is forging head with plans to exploit the country’s geothermal resource. This information came to light at the first Project Steering Committee Meeting for the Geothermal project held recently.

 

The Meeting was attended by Minister for Energy, Hon. Charles Savarin, Permanent Secretary, Mr. Vincent Philbert, Senior Project Officer in the Ministry of Public Utilities, Mr. Michael Fadelle, National Authorizing Officer of the European Development Fund, Mr. Edward Lambert, Mr. Paul Mondesir from the Office of the European Commission in Barbados and officials from DOMLEC, the Independent Regulatory Commission and the Private Sector.
