Actually, that self-preservation is why he remains a wild card. The Republican party is only a secondary interest, but they are what elevates him as leader. If he keeps them alive (vs. going down with Drumpf), he retains some power. At this point, he has lost the opportunity to dump Drumpf with moral high ground (the party didn’t support him). Now, he has to wean the Republican voters off Drumpf. He has lost a lot of money and entire revenue streams, but he has 6 years before he has to worry about reelection.

Which is why he wants rid of Trump. He wants to retain the control of the Party that he’s had – or more recently, imagined he’s had – for so many years now.

I think that is more of a case with Trump. Mitch works more in a broader political calculus. Though integrity has been fully abandoned in the Republican party at this point with a trace amount of exceptions.
He is a cold, hard multi-millionare playing with peoples lives as if they are chess pieces. He’s probably proud of his ‘strategies’.
