Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada told the state-run Bakhtar News Agency the death toll from the magnitude 5.9 temblor near the Pakistani border was likely to rise. Hundreds of homes and other buildings were destroyed, he said.

The quake, centered 25 miles southwest of Khost, struck at about 1:24 a.m. local time, when many people were sleeping in their homes. The European seismological agency estimated the earthquake’s tremors were felt over 300 miles by 119 million people across Afghanistan, Pakistan and India.

  1. Help the Taliban? Let them dig em out, it’s a hard pass for the international community

  2. Yeah we have our own problem back at home… I wonder who would come to our aid if something so small happens all the time

  3. If I saw destruction like that I’d think it was an 8.0 or higher. That’s why Third World countries need to step up. In Los Angeles you get a 5.9 Earthquake and people roll their eyes and go back to doing whatever they were doing, youre not killing 1000 people, or even 50, with something that weak

    1. It depends on the depth of the earthquake- shallow earthquakes are much more damaging than ones deep within the crust and this one was very shallow at only 10km. Building codes do play a big role in destruction of earthquakes (here in Chile- they are very strict), but in a war-torn country with a per-capita GDP of less than a thousand dollars, quality engineering and building materials probably aren’t a reachable goal for most people. Not that easy to just “step up”.

    2. Do you even know what a third world country is🤣🤣..third world doesn’t mean an underdeveloped nation fyi!afghanistan is a poor country but not all third world countries are under developed..so stop using the term lmaoo

  4. Let me get this straight now United States should help you what do they smoke what do they take come on let’s be honest everybody knows what happened over there when we try to help them

  5. Oh God….1000 death
What is happening in this world😭🙏🕉
    …deepest condolences from India

  6. Remember all that money we gave you over the last 20 years And remember how you paid us back….Just saying

  7. Regardless of their past, it’s still okay to have sympathy for them right now. Not everybody who died was an a$$hole. This is why humans are so rawr all the time, because people stopped caring.

And that’s super sad. RIP to those who lost their lives and sincere condolences to those suffering right now. 🙏❤️

  8. They are asking for help to the international community not just the USA. I am sure that Russia and China will help.

  9. Obviously, this is a tragedy and I do feel for the families and loved ones who are left behind to mourn. The Taliban are not known for being great advocates of Human Rights, in fact they are very acomplished and proficient at barbaric executions, torture and murder. Extreme conditions must be included with any offer of assistance, for instance:- ‘a total ban on any weapons within a 5 mile perimeter’, there must be top level security for all foriegn first responders, furnished by the UN. With no interference from any Armed Groups.
