As Acrimonious Presidential Transitions Go, 2020 Has Competition From History | Rachel Maddow

Rachel Maddow revisits the toxicity and hostility of Franklin D. Roosevelt's first inauguration in 1933 that was so complicated by the bitter pettiness of lame-duck Herbert Hoover that the date for future inaugurations was moved up by more than a month. Aired on 12/17/2020.

    1. @Marcos Juarez Actually it existed long before him, like 46 years before him, and societal stresses caused by this gradual and prolonged austerity is the reason why he was elected.

    2. @Forest Walker No, she wants to regressed back beyond the 1950s. The American people do not want to go back to the America of 1950s when they have all that McCarthyism.

    3. @Thomas Adams No, that’s a lie. Donald J. Trump is the one who created societal stresses and he is the one who gradually and prolonged austerity. Donald J. Trump is not the solution to the problems of austerity. Donald J. Trump is one who causing austerity. Too bad that Trump lost his reelection because he is making austerity worse than you thought.

    4. Because we have to pay for all the drug ads you see constantly on TV……wouldn’t want to miss out on the one for Colitis, whatever that is….

  1. Hoover (R) and FDR (D) hmmm. Seems that in the “lame duck” period they aren’t that lame. Other countries have a “caretaker period” – no major contracts, appointments etc. can be made

    1. And if the country is attacked, or an ally is? What then? Foreign enemies would make a point of acting badly during that period of powerlessness. Imagine if Turkey decided to invade Greek islands, but the president is not allowed to act.

    2. @Deborah Freedman Better thought out than that – if parliament agree, then any required action is taken. There are lists of guidelines, too much to include in my original comment. “Caretaker” is to stop Trump like behavior.

  2. Looks like Trump is doing everything he can to be the worst president in American history. I guess in his book that’s the best achievement he will ever have.

    1. That’s what he was chosen for. By his base, who wanted to punish the country for electing a Black president, and by his boss Putin. To destroy as much of the country as possible.

    2. I want to make sure he’s the first one to be locked up, for his crimes in office and before. Make sure your new administration knows we need justice? They will want to know what the public’s appetite for justice is like, or whether we all just want to get past trump. I say, we want both. To get past trump, by ensuring we don’t get another one in 4 years. Lock them all up✌️👍

    3. @nosuchthingasshould : That’s why examples must be made out of the GOP’s criminals. So we don’t get a worse one in 4 years

    1. @Larry Mosher – yeah, had Biden been in charge, millions more would have died. Trump won 2020, even after fake media lies and social media censored. Dems cheated and got caught. All Dem politicians are liars, cheaters, and should be under the jail. Hunter’s child pornography and money schemes are facts that media called Russian disinformation. Funny, FBI has been investigating him since 2018. Joe lied during debates, said he knew nothing about Hunter’s business dealings, emails prove he did. Just another corrupt Dem. politician.

    2. I’d call them Reaganvilles, because it was Reagans defunding of mental care facilities, and stripping away of the safety net that caused most of the homelessness we’ve seen for the last 40 years.

    3. @David Gambler Homeless people, from red states, flock to California, because they get better care there. A survey was taken of the homeless in San Francisco, and more than half came from Texas.

    1. We have to see to it that he does. It won’t happen unless it’s, “popular,” in public opinion. So that we don’t face another, worse Donny type in 4 years, we must make sure our new representatives KNOW we want justice ✌️👍

  3. Would tRump have liked that, such a long lame-duck period. Now he is doing his utmost already to monkey-wrench Biden’s administration.

  4. Rachel, I personally feel frightened because we are going through a period of a few months in which the current president has given up on the pandemic altogether as it dramatically worsens. He is secretly choking off funding from important institutions and, in general, is undermining our democratic processes.
Its a kind of irrational revenge and hatred he feels towards the general public (ie you and I). I gather we can do nothing except wait until he is out of office and try to right his grievous wrongs. I am left feeling helpless during the final catastrophic moments of his failed presidency.

  5. And then, FDR was the only President in the history of the United States ever to be elected four times because there are now terms on the United States Presidency since the 1950s.

  6. Who wants to bet Trump will try to jump on stage and take the oath? Or hold his own “Alternate Inauguration Parade”

  7. Hoover sent seeds to starving people. Homeless camps were called “Hoovervilles”, now they’re called “trumptowns”.

  8. Sean Hannity seems to have adopted Herbert Hoover’s hair style. Seems consistent with the political philosophy that he has also adopted.
