Big questions remain in wake of North Carolina power grid attack

The FBI is joining the investigation into power outages in Moore County, North Carolina, believed to have been caused by “intentional” and “targeted” attacks on substations that left around 40,000 customers in the dark. The mass outage turned into a criminal investigation when responding utility crews found signs of potential vandalism of equipment at different sites, according to the Moore County Sheriff’s Office. CNN’s Whitney Wild reports. #CNN #News

  1. 😊God help all the people in Moore County. Especially the emergency and other workers. Prayers for strength for the good people of North Carolina. This is a attack against all Americans.

    1. It’s god who caused it im the first place. Remember? He’s almighty and created us and our environment exactly in a way, that this would happen. Thats what omnipotence mean. He also caused the Holocaust and brussels sprouts.

  2. I’m in Houston, TX. We only need a light snow shower and couple of days in the low 20’s to have a similar outcome.

    1. @linguaphile42 In Moore County, NC 35.6% of the people voted Democrat in the last presidential election, 63.0% voted for the Republican Party, and the remaining 1.4% voted Independent.

In the last Presidential election, Moore county remained overwhelmingly Republican, 63.0% to 35.6%.
Moore county voted Republican in every Presidential election since 2000

    2. @HemiHead664 Please don’t go there! It’s Winter in North America, and I am in Toronto, Canada. I was heartsick when Texas power grid failed back in February of this year!!

    1. You are cruel. Every human has his human rights. Even a Terrorist. And thats not because of some moral value but because otherwise no one would be safe and judgemend cant garant to be fair. On the contrary. That why an eye for an eye got discarded a long time ago and a place got created where people couldnt cause harm to society anymore.

    1. @RightoftheRight Because leftist demons shoot stuff up…not.
Every Republican accusation is a confession.

    2. I promise a great many people will die. Even now 10 million people are still without electricity. In Ukraine. Not only electricity and heating is affected but also water distribution. And it has to be stopped. In Putin’s eyes it’s our war the Ukrainians are fighting. I only see one thing to do: Help Ukraine not only all we can, but all that they need (then we must find a way to do it). *Ukraine matters* – more than we think.
Are the Russians behind this attack on the US power grid? To stir up internal tensions, and prove they can hit you? Who knows? But it’s not unusual that they attack ours in Europe.
      Take care, stay safe!

    3. @Lars Ronæs Amen. Attacks on critical infrastructure are acts of war, and acts of terrorism. And an attack on the outposts of democracy is an attack on democracy’s heart. One can not respond half-heartedly.

    4. @School for Hackers If it’s the Russians it’s probaly not “bigger than this” as not to start a war over it. But it was well planned and coordinated.

I Europe we have never seen them do such with guns, but we don’t have guns everywhere like in the States.

When the Russians make actions in Europe they usually have certain similarities:

      – They make sure we notice it and fear sabotage.
      – They make sure we end up finding out it is sabotage.
      – They make sure we don’t find out who did it. And if (read “when”) we eventually do:
      – They make sure it’s not bigger than we won’t start a war over it (and instead choose to “pretend we don’t know who”)

I am not the FBI. I don”t know enough about the case. I don’t know enough about domestic problems in USA. So I can’t be sure the Russians are behind it. But if not them I will be surprised.

  3. I hope they catch whoever did this. If it was motivated by hate then I hope they are charged with a hate crime on top of everything else they can be charged with. Regardless of the motivation, it was stupid and cruel. It served no purpose but to cause suffering, especially among the elderly and those with medical devices that need electricity. We’re lucky that nobody has died as a result of the attack.

    1. Why isn’t anyone asking about the total lack of responsibility the service provider has in this total security failure? Stores have security. It makes no sense to me.
Well, I will be educating myself about my area. If this area is as vulnerable, I would like to be as prepared as possible. What shouldn’t be happening is. Very sad 😞

  4. Whoever did that is a very emotional person, it seems. It’s the type of person that acts and doesn’t think before doing stuff. I suppose they have hospitals, clinics, and elderly care facilities in those counties as well. Why hurt your own people?

    1. @Croiners Back up does not last long term. After a FL hurricane many elderly in care homes died from the heat because the outages were longer than back up power.

    2. if it is a thoughtless act, maybe they noticed these things make cool explosions when you fire at them.
people spend large amounts of money on “tannerite” for exploding targets for fun.
If kids or people with that level of foresight have guns, this could happen just out of stupidity without maliciousness beyond vandalism. maybe they went to the second facility because the first stopped making neat explosions – it could be something that stupid, or it could be terrorism.

  5. Who ever did this needs to be charged with the murder of all those who die due to not being able to use critical medical equipment they need to stay alive due to their actions !

    1. People on oxygen concentrators, can use oxygen tanks. Problem would be to deliver, pick up the empty tanks and refill them. Is there enough tanks to go around.

  6. It is so past time to kick in some doors around this country ! AND Put a law in place that has Real teeth to it when it comes to domestic terrorism or treasonous behavior and prosecute them !!

    1. I agree. Take any weapons you find and burn them. That’s what you were implying, wasn’t it?Than nobody could do any shooting any more.

  7. There needs to be immediate assistance to those vulnerable like the sick and elderly, people could lose lives because of this. Those guilty should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

    1. Whether they are prosecuted or not their Karma will hunt them down wherever they are. More and more homeless pooping in the streets and now this! All the weapons we are providing to Ukraine is causing the death and displacement of millions. Those who haven’t been wounded are now freezing to death with mass power outages. Karma, what goes around comes around, and as you sow, so shall you reap!
All this money being spent on weapons, would be better spent in improving our own nation right here at home. More government jobs, securely protected infrastructure, and other programs like affordable housing to, “Make America Great Again”. And no I am not a fan of Trump, but at least he tried to make peace with Russia and North Korea.

    2. If anyone dies from the power being out it will add a 2nd degree murder charge amongst the long list of other charges

    3. @Matt Roberts He was simply making a comment. Perhaps he’s not in a financial position to catch a flight out to North Carolina or send any money. Yet everyone still has a right to his or her own opinion regardless.

    1. @musoangelo is it really “waco” to value personal protection, and be responsible enough to do so? Can you understand that most armed citizens would have used their defensive firearm to STOP the attack? You couldn’t do anything to help, so why slander the ones who CAN?

    2. @SEEK THE TRUTH! A religion that threatens people with eternal condemnation after death is prone to violence against living people. You had that in the middle ages in Christianity. It seems to me that Islam is in its middle ages.

    3. @RightoftheRight Of course it was a “leftist”. Those libruhl commies always running around with AK-47s shootin up stuff. Even after we find out these terrorists are Dump supporters, you will find some reason to blame “leftists”.

  8. It’s NC, is anyone actually surprised by this? Anyone who has ever been through these states and stopped in any of the local bars or gun shops constantly hear people saying they are going to do just this kind of stuff. Nobody pays attention until they have no choice.

    1. @Jennifer Hampton Oh no. No, them watching culture wars on faux and them actually patriots. That’s what f*cker carlson told them and you know, he’s always right.

    2. @Logician3 They hate the US. They love Fascism.

Good ol GOP brainwashing. You can tell, because they say the exact same things.

  9. We have felony murder in NC and if anyone dies because they can’t get oxygen or a traffic light is out or they die from the cold these fools are on the hook for each of those deaths.

  10. I hope we am find this person and put him to justice also this blackout indicates how vulnerable and addicted we are to electricity and how we cannot live without electricity

  11. I do hope that citizens in N.C are able to help those affected in the meantime.
Is there any reputable organizations in N.C that the rest of us in the nation could give immediate donation help?

It may be time for another Infrastructure Bill to be introduced for hardening up these substations and perhaps some other vulnerable grid related things that we are not aware of.

  12. The absurdity to punish all for the supposed inequity of some is truly insane, and needs to be addressed.

  13. It takes an evil and extraordinarily selfish and ignorant mind to even think of doing this. Innocent people who are elderly or ill are so vulnerable with no power for this long and it becomes a life or death situation. I hope the ones who did this damage are found and held responsible very soon. I believe they will be.

    1. @Deborah Freedman unlikely given the maga rhetoric unless its russia trying to stir the pot, but they are being watched so cant enter the country.. so its right wing maga freaks clearly.

  14. Pray the attackers are caught, prosecuted, convicted, & jailed for the damage they caused. & if any people die due to their attacks they should be charged with murder.

  15. I live in North Carolina but not in any of these countries affected by the power outages, but I am a little bit disappointed that no one has opened up any type of temporary shelter or shelters for some of the people without power to go and stay to keep warm and safe until their power is fully restored.

    1. They have. I was reading an article from the AP and they were saying that an indoor colosseum or gymnasium (it was something big like that) was opened for meals, charging your phone, or just a place to rest for the night.

    2. @Jeremy Carpenter I hate misspellings too. I noticed that in the domestic terrorist’s post online that Jake read, the word lose was used instead of the correct word, loose (& no sic or anything to acknowledge that it was wrong.)

    3. @Margo Oh really everyone that’s ever misspelled one word is now a domestic terrorist like really ‼️‼️‼️

    4. @Patricia No, but when a major network like CNN makes an error with all the people they have to check on such things it leads me to think that the dumbing down of America is real. Not caring if you’re right or wrong, but just forging ahead anyway is careless and arrogant to the extreme.

  16. I’m curious why these critical infrastructure sites are not monitored with multiple cameras. The minute the gate was messed with an alarm should have gone off at the sherrif”s office. County officials and power company officials around the country should take this as a warning and update their security now for all thse substations.

    1. @Does It Even Matter ARE YOU SERIOUS? IT IS A POWER GRID — THOSE ELECTRICAL LINES WITH MILES AND MILES OF CONNECTION BEYOND ANYBODY’S COMPREHENSION — IT IS NOT JUST THE SUBSTATIONS. IT WILL TAKE MORE THAN SECURITY CAMERAS TO CAPTURE THESE DOMESTIC TERRORISTS — IT WILL TAKE THE WHOLE NATION TO DO THAT. UNFORTUNATELY, A SIZABLE PART OF THE POPULATION BELONGS TO WHITE SUPREMACISTS WHOSE ORIENTATION IS BASED ON THE IDEA OF TERRORISM.

    2. @Kurt Corbin ARE YOU SERIOUS?

    3. From what i’ve read, the sheriff sent officers to interview someone that posted a certain message on facebook and they ended up praying together. I wouldn’t be trusting the locals to figure this one out.
