The Republican claim that all of this was also going on under the previous administration is completely false. It is true that children were put into what are now being, probably unfairly, called “cages,” but those were almost always legitimate unaccompanied minors that they simply didn’t know what to do with. This policy of ripping children from their parents, literally as a stated matter of policy, with no meaningful system in place to reunite those children with their parents is evil and 100% a Republican creation.
I believe most of the detentions/separations under Obama were for illegal crossings rather than asylum seekers who presented themselves and then were detained. It is also certain that any of those parents of the 545 who declined to take their kids with them likely felt that the kids would be safe and did not want to risk taking them across the border to Mexico while they tried to continue their asylum efforts. It’s a horrifying situation either way and totally a creation of Stephen Miller and the GOP.
