Bodycam footage released in police killing of Daunte Wright

The killing of Daunte Wright, 20, is at least the third high-profile death of a Black man during a police encounter in the Minneapolis area since 2016, after the shooting of Philando Castile in Falcon Heights in 2016 and the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis last year.
Wright's death and the release of video from the officer's body camera, have triggered raw emotion in Brooklyn Center, just 10 miles from where the trial of Derek Chauvin — the former Minneapolis police officer accused of killing Floyd last year — is taking place.
The city's police chief has said the officer who shot Wright — identified by other authorities as Kim Potter — appeared to mistake her gun for her Taser, and is on administrative leave.
Demonstrators Monday night gathered near the Brooklyn Center Police Department for the second night in a row, with shouts of "no justice, no peace" accompanying the din of conflict.
Police fired tear gas and stun guns to disperse demonstrators, who authorities said were defying a curfew. And protesters threw "bottles, fireworks, bricks and other projectiles at public safety officials," according to a tweet from Operation Safety Net, a joint effort of local agencies meant to ensure public safety during the Chauvin trial.
In addition to dispersing the demonstrators, authorities responded to multiple reports of break-ins and looting.
About 40 arrests were made, Minnesota State Patrol Col. Matt Langer said.

  1. Oscar Grant all over again. As a cop, if you’re in enough “stress” to confuse your service weapon for a taser, seek other employment.

    1. this was no accident. chief said himself very different weights and feel and appearance located on opposite sides of the body with specific training so there can be no confusion

    2. White women are convicted. White men are not. She will go to jail, but it won’t be long. It’s something about that White skin on a man.

    3. @- you always be a meter maid. there are less stressful police positions. stop defending what you know is wrong.

  2. I am an OIFOEFOND USMC combat veteran.
When working with foreign combatants & civilians, we are often given Rules of Engagement (RoE). One of the most common RoE’s was, *”Do not fire, until fired upon.”*
It is an OUTRAGE to come back to my home country & see my own, fellow citizens aren’t afforded that same respect & discipline.

    2. @Jamarius Holden yea he should have just been allowed to flee the scene in a vehicle and put other people’s life at risk. I mean it’s not like he had a warrant out for his arrest…

    3. @Turtle Tail Maybe that’s why she was yelling taser taser to cover herself to make it seem like an accident?

    4. Sure our combat vets dont kill civilians/kids on foreign land. They just get ‘outraged’ when they come home

    5. Exactly, some people are try to say “well he should resist” and im just like thats not a good enough reason to kill someone, he didn’t try to kill them so why kill him? simply because he didn’t listen to you? Some people run away and get shot in the back for running, I really don’t understand how these things are a threat. She needs to go to jail for murder and all the other officers too that killed someone that wasn’t a threat at all. It happens way to often and they need real jail time, maybe they would stop the unnecessary killings.

  3. New police recruitment poster: “This is a taser. This is a gun. You need to know the difference to be a cop. It’s kind of important.”

    1. Several mistakes;
      Shut the engine off
Close the car door to avoid scaping
Scaping from two police officers’ arms
Get the guy at home you already kow about him
This is called police on high testessterone.

    2. @Laura LeMay Hailey yeah I read that too. It should be coming out of that good ole FOP pension fund but of course the tax payers will pay for it

  4. When you keep finding so many bad apples, at some point you might want to find out what’s wrong with the tree.

  5. My heart goes out to the mom, father, his little boy and aunt- all of his family. God be with you all. Don’t let her off

    1. What about the woman he choked & robbed at gun point? feel bad for her? He didn’t run because he was innocent.

    2. This is Dante’s right 99.9 per cent he should have never ever did felony evading arrest he could have used his vehicle as a deadly weapon as well

    3. Yeah they should be proud of their son with multiple outstanding warrants. Go criminals, bad cops for also trying to do their jobs. Hey dude jump back in your car and maybe grab a gun and flee. There is always two sides to a story.

    1. Know what else is noticeable? The fact that if he didn’t resist, it wouldn’t have happened in the first place. If you have a warrant, of course you’re going to get cuffed.

  6. 💯💯💯
She is so right 100%. My heart is with her. 💔
My city is with you and your family.
Doesnt mean much but Im from the city of Terrance Crutcher. Aka Tulsa, OK. My prayers are with you. 🙏 I pray for Justice because I know their will not be peace until then.

  7. Sorry for the loss . Prayers with the family but what about others who were looting stores ? were the really cared ?

  8. Very sad tragedy for this man and his family. Unfortunately it’s doesn’t seem like he made good choices in general… From robbing someone at gunpoint to running from the police wrong or right both parties are at fault and unfortunately a life was lost.

    1. Running from the police is one thing. Doing what he did, well, damn he surely wasnt afraid of the police. Id expect to get shot doing what he did. The world has lost its marbles.

    2. For his family? Definitely. For him? Meh. Like you said, his bad decisions led him to this end. He had numerous opportunities to avoid it.

    3. Awe come on this guy that was shot is a nice guy just mis-understood. He needed to kill someone but I still think the public would bash the cops reactions. The public is always right……..B.S!

    1. Holding a woman at gunpoint and stealing her rent money after she and her friend let you and a friend crash for the night because you don’t have a ride home is also pretty sickening. Posting photos brandishing a gun while on probation is pretty bad too.

    1. Yes, he should have listened and not fought. BUT that officer was in service for MANY years and should know the difference between a taser and a gun. Yes, it was an accident but she deserves what she got done to her.

    2. @Aurelia Nikoru You clearly haven’t been in an extremely stressful situation. This was a grave mistake that she made, however it doesn’t change the fact that it was an accident. This officer wasn’t able to handle the stress and pressure properly and was fired justifiably. When you’re in a situation like that, not everything is going through your mind and it’s not all being processed like it would be in a calmer situation.

    3. @howo357 agree. This kind of thing could have been avoided if Duante didn’t resist. BUT how the officer handled this situation was very very unprofessional. There needs to be serious retraining in the police and defunding is not gonna help, but make it worse

  9. I don’t know if taser and the gun had the same weight.. She held it 4 a few sec b4 firing..
Rest easily bro..sending prayers to your family that they’d find peace and ur parents will fight these till the very end😊🙏❤

    1. Depending on the taser it could be like 7 to 9 ounces, or about half a pound in weight. The model of the Glock in question determines its weight but not by much, a Glock 19 is like 22 ounces or just under a pound and a half. Its a pretty easy thing to mistake when the weights are that light and you grab it with your opposite hand.

Like say you are a chef and you know measurements just by weight, but you try to measure with your other hand you dunno all the weights well for.. Suddenly now you can easily make a mistake with the weight. Not to mention muscle fatigue will change how the weight of something will feel. Grab a pen and hold your arm out straight for as long as you can before it gets tired to the breaking point. Now use the same hand to hold it out again and suddenly it will feel way heavier.

    2. Well, she had to make sure the other officer was safely clear of the taser. She just didn’t take ANOTHER second to make sure she actually pulled out her taser.

  10. In a stage we’re you don’t know if when you in danger you call the cops or just deal with it because your afraid of being mistaken and get shot at … I hope y’all stay safe out there my black brothers and sisters and much love and respect for everyone ✊🏿✊🏽✊🏻that see and react to this problem we deal with…love one another no matter race or background 🌎 🕊

  11. I like that he let her speak without cutting her off. My condolences to his family and I pray justice will prevail because God not sleeping.

    1. JUSTICE? I’m sorry it was lethal but he was in the wrong all around this is way different then George flyod

    2. @Cory Sicard still took his life… does not matter whether if he did wrong or not. An officer should know between a gun and a taser…

    3. @jacob 99% of “unjustified” shootings happen because of people resisting. Show me 1 instance of anybody of any race where there was no resisting involved and 100% compliance and they were shot. In this situation there is no question that she fucked up. What she did was horrible, but still a mistake. Should she keep her job? Probably not, she clearly can’t handle the stress. However, I have no doubt in my mind that if this kid had continued to comply he would’ve made it out of this interaction alive and well.

  12. OMG how heartbreaking. I have buried both my sons so I know this pain the family feels and will be forced to live with forever. This young man earned his wings to early. He had a life, he was a real human being with a GOD given SOUL, he existed and did not deserve this. FATHER GOD please send your loving angels to this family and envelop them in your love. Daunte resides with CHRIST now, please find peace in that.He will not be forgotten.

  13. Prayers to the family. The aunt is right. Daunt Wright did not deserve this. R. I P. Duarte.
