CONTRACT SIGNED FOR FOND ST. JEAN SEA DEFENCE AND ROADWORKS

DOMINICAN COMPANY ACE ENGINEERING TO BEGIN WORK IN JANUARY 2009

Roseau, Dominica – December 3, 2008……….. Work on a vital piece of infrastructure in the village of Fond St. Jean will begin next month following the signing of a contract between the Government of Dominica and ACE Engineering Limited.

According to Project Engineer, Mr. Emile Lancelot, the project was born out of the need to minimise the risk of the village of Fond St. Jean from being cut off from neighbouring villages and the rest of the island by extension “in the event of any heavy sea action on its coastline”.  The safety of the road was also heavily compromised by the passage of Hurricane Omar recently and Hurricane Dean of August 2007.

The Fond St. Jean Sea Defence and Roadworks project will comprise the rehabilitation of 240metres of Road and the construction of approximately 29m of retaining sea wall. The Carriageway will be 6.5 metres wide with slipper drains on both sides and a 1.5m wide sidewalk. The average height of the retaining wall will be 4m.

The works will span from the Fond St. Jean Bridge to the bend near the Fisheries facility at the beginning of the village.

The design was done by the Ministry of Public Works and Infrastructural Development. The contractor on the project is ACE Engineering Ltd., a locally owned and operated contracting company. The project will be executed under the supervision of the Ministry of Public Works and Infrastructural Development, at cost of EC$2.34 Million and is expected to be completed within twenty-six (26) weeks.

The contract signing ceremony took place on Monday, December 1, 2008 in the Ministry of Finance Conference Room. Prime Minister, Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit, Minister for Public Works and Infrastructural Development, Hon. Rayburn Blackmoore, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Public Works, Mr. Nicholas Bruno, Chief Technical Officer, Mr. Kendol Johnson, Project Engineer, Mr. Emile Lancelot and Mr. Anthony Leblanc from ACE Engineering Ltd. attended the signing ceremony.
