So, a 19 yr old can go into a financial aid office and “apply’ for a 5K loan per semester with no work history, no credit score, No income, and be given that money. 8 years ago when people who made 2K a month were given 200K mortgages…and that was predatory lending. Sounds kinda similar.
@me me What are the interest rates? Loans aren’t predatory just because they’re originated. Loans can become predatory when the cost of financing becomes obscene. A 6% loan to your 19 year old is not predatory. It’s a gift. Your 19 year old with no job, no income, and no credit score would be paying two or three or four times that if they were subjected to market forces. Tax payers are loaning money to people no one else would loan money to otherwise. The federal government does not loan students money assuming they’re going to screw up and be unable to repay it.
Your example loan isn’t predatory because your person makes 2k/month or because they could borrow 200k. It’d be “predatory” because it was an 1/8 ARM and that person had zero shot of being able to pay once the intro 1% rate expired.
Don’t worry about voting. The DNC and MSNBC will tell you who to vote for. You will be incredibly happy.
