At this point in time, I think give it to everyone in nursing homes. As soon as it’s proven safe, give it to health care workers. Optionally, give health care workers the option of having it before being proven safe if that’s what they choose to do, particularly for the older ones who are at high risk of covid & not so high risk of 50 years of side effects if there’s a problem with it

Sure, the government should put measures into place to reduce the spread, but given that they are refusing, that does not prevent individuals from doing their part. It doesn’t have to be mandated to be effective. Social distance, wear masks, wash hands frequently, use sanitiser, only go out when absolutely essential. Every drop of personal responsibility helps.
What I don’t understand is why a lot of Americans feel that wearing a mask and social distancing goes against their constitutional rights. I had assumed that being considerate and compassionate was humane and decent, by not wearing a mask and social distancing you are potentially putting more and more lives at risk. I am not directing this at the conspiracy whack jobs that think the whole COVID-19 issue is fake and that it doesn’t really exist. What are Americans going to do when the death toll overtakes the million mark?
330,000,000 people in America… 235,000 Deaths… That’s less than 1/10 of 1% death rate. 1 million deaths would be 3/10 of 1%. In all the years past when you went to the Dr with the flu did the Dr ever wear a mask? Did you? You could go to the pharmacy hacking your brains out and no mask required.. why do they care now? Do you know what makes our immune systems weak? Its sugar and fast food, why are they still selling that stuff? 99% survival rate with Covid… This panic doesn’t make sense to me.

I’ve never had the flu, so can’t comment about hacking your brains out, but normally when I cough I do it into a handkerchief and not over other people. And comparing Covid with the Flu doesn’t really work, because it has taken 6 years of Flu deaths to match 7 months of Covid deaths in the US. The UK now has guidelines compelling people to wear a mask when on public transport, going into shops or gas stations, and can get fined if they don’t comply. Many other countries have implemented similar guidelines, why is so difficult for some Americans to ignore the truth and protect others. Now that doesn’t make sense to me.

@Sagittarius75 That’s not how you calculate the death rate of anything. Take the number of deaths and divide by the NUMBER OF INFECTIONS to get the death rate. We’ve had 10 million infections. A 1% death rate would be 100,000. A CDC estimate back a month or so ago was that the US had actually exceeded 300,000 deaths by that point. An independent research study found that the US had 300,000 deaths by sometime in August. The actual US death rate has been over 3%. Beyond that, something like a third of everyone infected has long term effects. A recent study using brain scans of people who gave had Covid-19 controlled to those who haven’t, found that recovered Covid-19 patients’ brains had damage equivalent to aging 10 years. How would you like to wake up tomorrow and find out that you are 10 years more forgetful, you reaction time is 10 years slower, and it was 10 years harder to formulate arguments?

Hey wow, an American who actually “gets it”! Living in Australia, we’ve had a winter with covid, we’ve known since then, that what this lady is saying is where you are going. Please take it seriously America! This IS a winter virus! It’s season IS the same as the flu! For months it’s been tracking at the same ratio of cases as the flu, but at a rate of 19,000 covid cases to every 1 flu case. So think about what that means for covid cases in a country that gets 60,000 flu deaths each winter!

The Melbourne Victoria outbreak was handled entirely by the state’s leader. The Aussie PM was there to support him on almost everything he did, but he handed control over to the state leader because the virus was confined to the state, so that was what worked best. The key was that state borders were closed, so no-one could move in or out with the virus, which meant the state leader had all the power he needed to control the entire outbreak in the state.
That is the easiest option for the US to go down right now & that seems to be the direction Biden is going, if he can guarantee states the replacement funds for whatever they spend on covid now, including paying people to stay home if they conduct a lockdown & offer them support if they lockdown the state borders & require 14 days quarantine for any non-essential movement into the state, then it should be possible to contain & even eliminate it in all the states with competent governors
