Why are they still taking cruises knowing this virus is going around
Peter Bush I was quarantined because had broken foot told to stay off for six weeks.
The Zaandam departed on this cruise on March 7th. That’s before coronavirus was declared a pandemic and long before most states declared shelter in place and issued stay at home orders.
Sure this is after things were getting bad in China and Italy but most governments still didn’t acknowledge the virus as a widespread problem.
Most people in these comments are basically saying “screw them”. What a horrible attitude. It doesn’t matter where these people are from, we should care for the to the best of our abilities.

Ron Dear you have to understand I was reading and in acute care around doctors. I have yet to be out and won’t till this over.And China this started in December.
The claim from that elderly man saying “you dont care” raises questions ” Did you care, when you decided to board a cruiser in the middle of a pandemic regardless of all the warnings? Did you care, about possibly infecting others? Did you care, about adding any more stress to the already stressed health personnel sacrificing their own health to help reckless, selfish people like you? ….and lastly….Did you care, whether or not this was going to be your last resting place?….sounds to me like they all embarked on a suicidal mission, now be a man and face whatever the consequences of your own foolish act may be.
That is a bit harsh. Off loading them and having them quarantined would be better decision.

….. this is not just ANY decision. This is that decision that involves peoples lives!! And yes, ive made many wrong decisions in my life and so has everyone else, but this is not the time! This is a time when we need to stop acting inmature and selfish and stupid. Sadly, It is people like those on that cruise ship, the springbreakers on the beach etc, the ones that are going to force our Drs in the hospitals when they run out of equipment to decide which life to save and which one to let go, and sadly that time is coming for us americans! If they are going to provide treatment for these people fine, but not at the risk of other lives because the ones that kept their feet on land and are contributing to end this virus nightmare are just as americans and as “rightful” as the ones on the cruise!

Hard to feel a ton of sympathy for people going on a cruise during a pandemic.
I know but no matter how stupid they are still people, but I blame the cruise line and they were talking bail outs.
Real hard. Its like jumping in a lion cage and then screaming for help after. You didn’t think one of the 5000 on the ship would have it. They gambled and lost.

@Taiwan is Moving I understand it must be scary to be in the situation, more so at their age. However, thinking of the nurses and doctors without access to proper ppe being put at risk…. My mother in law is an ER RN in FL. I’m struggling to balance empathy and rational thinking. I’ve heard a number of reasons they are stranded on the ships. One person justified it with “they don’t do refunds” to another saying they left Argentina 24 days ago and haven’t found a port to accept them. Even another saying only 1/3 of the people are even Americans. I guess no matter the details, I’m thankful to not have the responsibility of making that decision.
Maybe people are going to start to realize that stay home means stay home. It’s not a game. That cruise should have been cancelled.

Obama handled 3 pandemics! And people still took cruises, because they trusted the federal Government and the administration running it to handle the crisis. And the Obama administration did handle it and guided the federal agencies through it with minimum damage. So I guess their biggest fault is in believing that the current bunch of incompetents would be able to follow a pandemic playbook that was literally put in their hands and left to them in case another pandemic occurred. So I guess it’s clear now that we can’t believe anything the tRump administration says or does.
@Bobby Rosario yeah and any reasonable person knows that that recommendation itself came late in the game. we’ve known about this virus since the beginning of the year, at the latest. there were already several coronavirus cruises before this one even departed so they deserve ZERO sympathy.
Melanie Jecker they’re still human beings. Sometimes we decide who to sympathize with base on who it is, even in the worse cases. I got a friend who’s uncle is doing life in prison for murder and his family and friends all sympathize with him even tho he pleaded guilty to killing the guy.

We just had two cruise ships leave from Galveston here a day or so ago. I can’t believe the people felt like it waa safe to go, I sure would not have gone!!!

I’m so confused why cruises are not grounded for now! I am a cruise lover… you couldn’t pay me to get on one after that first cruise had the virus! It’s insane!

Bobby Rosario I greatly sympathize the princess diamond victim back in February. I wish I could do everything to help them. But, zaandam, my suggestion is just quarantine them on the ship for 2 months. Just like we have been quarantined ourselves too. Our medical staff is risking their life. I don’t think it.s worth it to prioritize doctors resources on selfish people. My point is to protect medical people.
