As a Catholic, I am offended. As an American, I can only say that the people who sent this man to Congress ought to be ashamed as well. As an ex Catholic, schooled in the Catholic educational system including BA degree from a Jesuit institution, I can attest, one of the very worst slanders Trump has committed, and one of more profound confessions of his ignorance, is when he said speaker Pelosi is lying when she says she prays for the President. I can flat guarantee you, Pelosi as a life long Catholic, also schooled in the Catholic School system, likely prays harder for Trump than she does for anybody else, save maybe her kids and hubbie.
This is one of the most widely advocated practices of the Catholic Church. It is a teaching I have tried to retain in my daily spiritual life, even though I am no longer a practicing Catholic. Let me tell, you, it’s often not easy. It’s not just a form of masochistic denial, like the admonition to “turn the other cheek” can be. It’s not like the admonition to “clean up your own side of the street”, and let the other guy take care of his own spiritual life. Both of those can be spiritually healthy, but they also can be excuses to not stand up for yourself, which is NOT Jesus’ teaching. Praying for someone who has done wrong, especially done personal wrong to you, requires a clear recognition that the other person has wronged, has sinned. The admonition to pray for that person, in and of itself, doesn’t even forego imposing retribution, although such foregoing is presumed as a bar on vigilantism, i.e., we are required to forego “eye for an eye” when the legal processes are available.
Usually, one does not have the power or capacity to get justice, to impose retribution as “eye for an eye” or through the courts,on the putative wrongdoer. Pelosi’s abilities, as skilled and powerful as she is as Speaker, are limited. But I know from my Catholic training, she is sincere in petitioning God, not to hurl punishment of Trump, but to change his heart. Praying for the other person doesn’t necessarily imply praying for good things or random gifts be bestowed on the person. It generally implies petitioning God to intervene in some way, in that person’s private consciousness, that serves to bring a change in the person’s understanding, to see the wrong he or she has committed, and to then set it right. A good example (save for its “magical quality) would be Saul’s Pauline conversion to Godliness at a time when he was persecuting Christians. In present days, we have many testaments of former “skin-heads” who persecuted minorities, often even murdering them, but later had a personal awakening of how evil they were to do so. This is not to harm the person, but in the sense of mercifully bringing that person to an understanding of their sinfulness (wrongness, if that word offends your sensibilities).
Now Jesus was not a half bad psychotherapist. When someone has wronged us and we can not do anything about it that won’t bring even worse harm, it fills us with hatred that’s almost all consuming. One way to purge that hatred is to develop a will that the other experience a change of heart, which intrinsically involves seeing their sinfulness. Eradicating sin is good, but doing so by changing the heart of the sinner is better than, say, torturing or killing the sinner (LOL). One of the benefits to the wronged person of praying for the enemy is that it significantly diminishes the amount of hatred one feels. It diminishes the frequency and intensity of the constant anger that eats away at the aggrieved person.
Pelosi is not lying when she says she prays for Trump. Trump is slandering her and displaying the breadth of his ignorance of Catholicism when he says it.
