    1. Me too! I’ve been living with bipolar disorder, depression and PTSD for over 20 years. Meds have not worked (actually made it worse) and therapy was fairly helpful but I feel therapied out if you know what I mean. Sounds like a great book that teaches me to regulate myself. Looking forward to reading it and learning!

    2. @Maria Davis Ohh no!! No meds at all, helped even slightly with mood regulation, for bipolar? That’s really tough. Yes, DBT has really been a breakthrough for so many people!! Good luck to you hun. I have terrible panic disorder! It can usually be kept at bay with meds and exercise, unless it’s a very tragically stressful time. Then, I need more. That’s why I want to learn DBT. 💖🙏

    3. @Maria Davis I was able to experience such training at a Veteran Affairs Medical Center. Some of what the Dr./instructor told us seemed kinda “weird”, at first. Being able to practice in a group session (where 5 other people also did as she instructed) helped me to feel much more comforatable practicing using these methods, myself. I say this in hope that you might find a similar out-patient group with a medical professional who can help guide you (at least initially) in this kind of therapy. I found it to be extremely helpful and I hope it helps you, too.

    1. I am trained in DBT but not philosophy and this made me look into stoicism. Wow the parallels are uncanny! I do wonder if Linehan (developer of DBT) was influenced by it!

  3. We used DBT skill training in a juvenile male prison environment. After having used DBT with BPD females for years, I enjoyed watching the boys grasp the skills of mindfulness in day to day coping.

    1. @roger palmer I have been there. I just got out of it. I spent about 30 years feeling that way. So I have a bit more insight that someone who has just studied it.

    2. @Virtue Ethics Keep Reading! but them saying it that way makes it different. It is changing what they are struggling with. From experience, I have had therapist and psychiatrist try to tell me that is what I was dealing with. It is very different. It is like saying you have a need to smell your voided bowels just because you go to the bathroom. Both can be true but it is more common that you have to just use the bathroom.

    3. @Dré Berry I like the way you put it.

      I get a lot of satisfaction in seeing things (and trying to see things) from a grand perspective that I am often surprised to find actually missing, perhaps, because of the turnover of new innovations, sometimes rapid (e.g., social media data that enables markets to locate consumers without actually ever meeting them, or cellular data consumption that far exceeds common ethical or security understanding).

      My youth in front of the TV is nothing like my selection of YouTube channels, but those completely removed from such information would say they are the same. These are just examples.

      It’s made me suspicious that our pop psychology tends to accommodate rapid innovation, too, such that what’s missing is an expression of things that individual behavior could never satisfy its meaning alone, anyway, and more acceptable behavior is then ameliorated as a sort of naturalized epistemology (like patriarchies have manufactured sexism as a norm, and so on).

      We live in such an ideological information driven culture that presupposes government should make capitalism superior in the world, that its trends in psychology actually befit more of the same. This seems to precede most considerations for me, lately. Forgive me if all this is too much information. But thanks for reading and for being here, Cheers!

  4. DBT sounds very similar to CBT. IT is not the same at all. Even professionals can’t tell them apart?

  7. Bravo to Dr. Aguirre and Dr. Galen on this and their other amazing books on dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) skills. We teach DBT skills entirely online and have the opportunity to witness some amazing transformations. DBT can be quite life-changing!

  8. Having works for a psychiatrist on the east end of LI, Mental health crises indeed. Not enough child psychiatrists
    or affordable psychiatrists and therapists.
