Maybe this will help clear things up, for anyone who’s honestly interested:
Speaker Pelosi has explained that if Trump is impeached in the House *but is exonerated by sycophants in the Senate, it will impede or prevent his criminal prosecution upon leaving office.*
What we all *should* want, for our future security more than for punitive reasons, is for the president to go directly from the White House to the Big House.
If Trump evades prison, how safe can we ever expect to be? He has already proven that personal enrichment trumps patriotism and the rule of law (pun very much intended.)
On the other hand, as AOC has skillfully argued, it’s also imperative that we set a precedent for our future expectations of the executive branch, to prevent future presidents from citing Trump’s lawless behavior as a new and acceptable norm. It’s also true that forcing Senate Republicans to record a permanent vote in support of a lawless president is necessary to make them formally accountable.
It is harmful to the discourse that media outlets are perpetuating (and profiting from) outrage, by voicing the frustrations of both sides without explaining them. Our messaging problem is only exacerbated by pundits who, through incompetence or disingenuousness, fail to present the reasons for Pelosi’s “failure” to impeach, and it allows Republicans to take advantage of this and perpetuate thier very effective (and false) talking points about the Democratic Party.
