Concerning the Congress people: Jumping ship at that point would have been the same thing as quitting your very well-paid job in protest. Few people are ready to pay that highly for having a conscience … and given the traditional republican platform, a good part of them might not have had much of a problem with Trump.

At first there were a few agitators, that I personally have witnessed. During that time, you’d never see police in riot gear. Later on there were more and more incidents, resulting in police showing up in riot gear and using tear gas, pepper spray and, later on rubber bullets. As a response to that, protesters started to also gear up, to protect them selves. At the same time, the “proud bois” and “bugaloo bois” became more active in causing unrest and riots. Yes, they have been mostly responsible for the rioting and unrest. In the first place, they have no business to even be there. They are from out of state. People like that would never feel at home in Portland, because they are far rightwing racists, xenophobes, and militant anti everything that Portland stands for.
Oh, you will say that Portland is intolerant? Yes, intolerant of white nationalists, racists, neo Nazis, white supremacists. Why should someone come to Portland with Nazi signs, and confederate flags? And yet, they are allowed to have their own demonstrations, even though they are from places like Idaho.

When Trump called for the China ban on January 31, every Democrat called him xenophobic (including Biden). He did it anyway. The US had 6 cases then. The President enacted the Defense Production Act 78 times for PPE equipment. When states called for ventilators our President got major American industries to retool *that week* to get them made. He sent so many to NY it could not even use them all and sent them to other states. He sent the Hospital ship to NY and Cuomo could have used it for the COVID positive Seniors that were returned to nursing homes at Cuomo’s order. Cuomo killed thousands. Now we are in the final phase of a vaccine that experts said we would not have for 2 years. Trump gets more done in a week than most politicians get done in their entire careers. It’s a highly communicable virus that needs to spread until there is heard immunity.

Every parent has the choice to send their children to whatever school they want now, don’t they? All you need to send your kid to a private school is about $40,000 a year. Perhaps if all levels of government in total spent $40,000 per pupil of taxpayer money, instead of anywhere from only $7,000 to $11,000 (in 18 states) to $20,000 (in one state) or so, the quality of education in the public schools would be as high as in private ones and no one would need any sort of subsidy or voucher to send their kids to a private school. You gets what you pays for, as they say, and Americans want high quality government services on the cheap, unless they are providing the labor, in which case they expect generous salaries. If public schools were funded to the tune of $40,000 per year per student, perhaps the private schools, like the high-class prep school I went to in NYC, would become superfluous. If the same level of education were achieved in virtually every public school, why not? Expensive, yes. But all those rich people to whom $40,000 a year per kid is chicken feed, could contribute that amount voluntarily to the till. (I went to the prep school on a scholarship generously provided by the rich parents and alumni, but that wouldn’t be needed if the public schools were as good because the prep school itself would probably just become part of the public school system.) That wouldn’t be nearly enough money, but what exactly are we getting out of a $758,000,000,000 so-called defense budget paying for bases and other installations in well over 100 countries and multi-billion dollar aircraft carriers roaming the earth? One aircraft carrier costs 50% more than the whole annual school budget of Los Angeles. We have 43 of them. Our aircraft carriers could pay to educate three generations of Angelenos, from now to 2080. What will make our nation stronger, make our nation more indispensable to the rest of the world in the long run, being the smartest country in the world or the one most armed to the teeth? It’s clear what the president and his followers think.
