Emperor penguins in Antarctica monitored by robot | USA TODAY

ECHO is a remote-controlled robot that silently spies on the penguin emperor colony for scientists.

The research is part of the Marine Animal Remote Sensing Lab, designed to measure the health of the Antarctic marine ecosystem.

Tracking the penguins also allows scientists to study penguin behavior over time, and see how they adapt as their environment shifts due to climate change.
