Evolution in action? A new study suggests lizards may be adapting to colder weather

A new study suggests lizards falling out of trees in Florida may be developing a higher tolerance to colder temperatures. CTV News' Science & Tech Specialist Dan Riskin breaks down why these new findings are a big deal.

    1. > Too bad the earth is getting warmer every year eh ?

Such a predicable comment. 🙄 It’s so predictable that if Vegas was taking bets on someone making it, the odds would be even less than 1:1. ¬_¬

  1. Adaptation is built into the creature. That’s why lizards lived through many different climates. Adaptation is not evolution. Or they would not adapt back.

    1. John Calverley Adaptation is not evolution. Adaptation is a system built into animals so that they can adapt to heat or coldness etc.. The adaptation never is lost. Even if you live in air-conditioning your whole life you will adapt within your lifetime if the air conditioning should go off.

The birds that Darwin spoke of, the finches, their beaks would grow or shrink according to the need, based on the food supply. He considered this evolution, but it was adaptation, because they returned back to the short beaks when the food supply changed back. It’s a built-in mechanism. There is no mechanism found with evolution that would force the creature to change its functionality based on need. It has to be written into the DNA as information.

DNA contains all the coding that is necessary to create the proteins and to regulate the systems of the genes. For evolution to function it would have to rewrite the coding. We have no evidence that’s ever happened. We only have evidence that information is lost, never that it is added. For evolution to be true you would have to prove information is being added. We wouldn’t be able to look at all of the diversity in life and argue it was added by evolutionary Processes.

    2. John Calverley You do believe in evolution?Do you believe in the Big Bang theory? Do you believe that life originated from nonliving material?

    3. Chris Anaxagoras Says the guy with no content. Let me count how many subscribers are interested in what you have to say.

  2. Those lizards are not even supposed to live in Florida they thriving this climate because it resembles their natural habitat. It does not mean that it is their actual habitat. Meaning it could get cold enough they won’t like it. Evolution is false it is a fake religion. That is not evolution in action evolution has not ever been witnessed. That is survival of the fittest which actually does happen. We do not see a change from one species to another. We see a variation in the same kind.

  3. Unfortunately this is the exception to the rule; evolution usually works too slowly for the rapid changes that humans are causing, so the vast majority of animals and plants keep going extinct, very few manage to adapt fast enough. 😕

    1. @FaithwalkerTodd Polar Bears, seal species, coral reefs. But why should I bother, since it’s all “fake”.

    2. mrodriguezmerc Yeah, I think that’s wrong. There are more seals today than they were when Obama was the president.

  4. Why would they be evolving for the cold if the planet has been warming since the last ice age. Maybe they know something we don’t.
