Fans banned from Olympic venues in Tokyo due to coronavirus concerns

Tokyo venues for the pandemic-delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympics will not have spectators due to the city's coronavirus state of emergency through the Games, according to the Japanese Olympic Committee.
The announcement was made following a meeting of five Olympic and Japanese government groups responsible for the Games.
Japanese Olympic Committee Seiko Hashimoto said due to the pandemic, organizers have "no choice but to hold the Games in a limited way."
According to an IOC spokesman, it's unprecedented for a host city's venues not to have spectators.
There are total 42 venues listed on the Tokyo 2020 website. Twenty-five are in Tokyo and the rest are in seven other prefectures.
However, three prefectures near Tokyo — Chiba, Kanagawa and Saitama — will not have spectators at Olympic competition venues, according to Hashimoto.
Miyagi, Fukushima, and Shizuoka prefectures have decided that venues can be filled to 50% of capacity with a maximum of 10,000 spectators, added Hashimoto.

  1. New Zealand was the only one qualified to host the Olympics, but why would they want to? When I heard about Japanese theme parks with roller coasters and people not allowed to scream…there is something so haunting about a silent roller coaster.

  2. If they are still in a state of an emergency then its a good call, wouldnt even be surprised if they cancelled it.

  3. Why even bother to have the Olympics at all…..what a sad venue it will be without Fans….

    1. They will have it going because Tokyo spent a lot of money prepping the city for the event.

    2. @Sun Dragon I know…the argument still stands though…perhaps the saddest Olympics ever…

  4. Seems Rome has already crumbled, if there are no spectators, then there is no spectacle. The whole thing just becomes a production. A movie. Rome has become a fiction of itself.

    1. There are spectators. Is just they will all be at home. Honestly that’s the only way I’ve ever been a spectator at the Olympics.

  5. We watched the euros without supporters , the difference with or without fans is a fail , these games should be canceled it will be rubbish to watch

  6. Seeing how just 14% of Japanese people are fully vaccinated, that’s a thing they should wanna improve upon.

  7. Meanwhile 67,000 people were allowed to watch the England vs Denmark Euro World Cup Semi Final in the UK in person yesterday…

Japan really doesn’t want these games to take place, so why bother watch?

  8. So they couldn’t go with an emergency approval for the vaccines we’ve all been using for months? Not even for the greater Tokyo area? Of course, the real question is how you can hold a sporting event like that during these times, but I think we all know the answer to that.
