@DavidCAdams I have zero confidence in JDT, Pence and friends……however, there’s massive scientific and public pressure on the Administration to act responsibly and those forces are slowly causing better action by the WH. Many lives would have been saved if DJT would have taken appropriate measures in a prompt fashion, but now that they’ve been pushed into action, I’m thinking the testing may be accelerated. That number is wrong. Significant percentage of that number are people with underlying life threatening conditions already. So without the coronavirus even existing these people were facing death repeat. Just because you pass with the coronavirus does it mean you passed because of it. comprende? In fact in New York they say the regular death rate of other illnesses is way way way down. Why is that? Because they counting those deaths has Corona caused deaths, incorrectly. 98% of those dying with covid19 are people with life threatening underlying conditions already. Like I said the death rate from other illnesses in New York City for instance is way way way down. But not really. Why? Because they’re counting many of those deaths as being caused by covid-19, incorrectly.

Fareed Zakaria seems to be badly misrepresenting Dr. John Ioannidis conclusions about the real IFR (Infection fatality rate) of COVID-19. It’s true that the IFR is much smaller than the CFR (case fatality rate) because of the large number of unrecorded infections (due to lack of testing). Ioannidis, however, concludes that the true IFR for COVID-19 likely is somewhere between 0.5% and 1%. That seems consistent with the mainstream opinion of professional epidemiologists that I have seen quoted in the Wikipedia COVID-19 article in recent weeks. It is not, however, at all comparable to the seasonal flu (0.1%). It is 5 to 10 times higher! This new virus also is much more infectious, and hence much more liable to spread to a large segment of the population absent severe measures of social distancing, as compared with the seasonal flu for which herd immunity and vaccination already protects many people.
@William Magann First, COVID-19 is much, much more contagious thant he flu and both the rate of hospitalization and the ratio of hospitalized patients that die with this are a hell of a lot higher than with the flu. You don’t need the definite total number to figure out that the people that end up in the hospitals with this die more often than the ones who walk in with the flu. Second, this has officially killed 22k people *in a single month* in the US. Again, even without knowing the definitive fatality rate, it’s obvious that this cause more harm, kills more people, spreads more quickly, and overwhelms the healthcare system more than the flu. The flu is always present and it does not blow up like this and as quickly as this. Also, when they have the flu, the vast majority of people – and we’re talking much more that the 80% with _mild symptoms_ of COVID-19 – only have tough symptoms for 2 to 3 days. You might feel sick for a week, but you don’t feel like you’re dying the whole week. COVID-19 takes a big percentage of healthy people on a 10-15 days ride of crippling fever, sleepless nights of rigor and hallucinations. And most of the people that end up in the hospital have gone through that 10-15 days already. This thing starts progressively until it’s unbearable and it drags on and on. The only thing this has in common with the flu is that it is a respiratory disease and you can prevent it by taking the same basic measures that nobody care about because 99.9% of people have nothing to fear from the flu. When has the flu ever killed tens of people in the same retirement home _in the same week_ in multiple homes in one month?

Unfortunately, Zakaria promotes Ioannidis heterodox (and deeply flawed) arguments without subjecting them to any skepticism or criticism.
The mortality rate is extremely dependent on the location. Italy vs NY vs GERMANY vs ARIZONA so many different variables at this point most areas of the United States have around 0.0043 percent. Do the math lol wait no math to do because the testing was a complete failure at this point conjecture and sensationalism is what it appears.
William Magann i’m 55 years old and I have never heard of a hospital being overwhelmed by patients requiring ventilation because of the flu. In fact, I have never heard of hospitals being overwhelmed even with nonventilated patients. What happen in China and in Italy and New York City – – have you ever heard of that happening with the flu?
The point of this is no one knows and we won’t know for some time. We’re not flying blind, we’re flying in the clouds on instruments that aren’t terribly accurate doing the best we can with the data we have today.

This virus is going to keep side stepping experts mainly because they are too quick to put assumptions into models. More people were infected than we thought but Its probably not more than triple in some areas but here is real dilemma people who are counted as asymptomatic can remain so for 2-3 weeks before deteriorating and no study has really had the time to factor that lag in and it is premature to extrapolate asymptomatic statuses to entire populations based on limited data because the virus distribution isn’t uniform in the slightest as it hasn’t had long enough and we acted promptly to confine it to pockets.
Every expert I saw back in January said testing was the most important thing we had to do. No Testing = No Data. Without data, it’s all presumptions, theories, and guessing, regardless how “educated” you are.
and without testing, you can’t charge for a medical procedure.

@Dominic Gunderson Actually, you count the dead for the year and you compare with an average for previous years. The difference should give you a pretty good estimate of the coronavirus impact on the death rate.

It can be estimated by “ Chance People that died from corona” times “Chance that people died later that year due to other health conditions”. Both are very low actually.

And BTW…projections and models aside, from my vantage point in the New York metropolitan area I see social distancing as first and foremost about preserving the existing healthcare infrastructure (people, meds, equipment, beds) which is currently stretched to the brink.
