It’s worth noting that Finland’s traditional neutrality had a lot to do with the fact that any potential allies were too far away from them to react effectively should the USSR decide to attack. Now that NATO has spread towards the east and includes Poland and the Baltic republics, there would be real advantages for them in joining.

As a person born in Czechoslovakia, a country which was occupied by Russians for more than 20 years, I can definitely say that it is safer to be a NATO member than to be an Russian ally.
