Fmr. FBI Hostage Negotiator On How Washington Can Escape Political Gridlock | MSNBC

Under current Senate rules, the filibuster requires at least 60 votes to end debate on most legislation, meaning either 10 Republicans need to join Democrats, or all 50 Democrats must agree to change the filibuster. Some claim this situation has trapped President Biden’s agenda hostage. NBC’s Joshua Johnson is joined by Chris Voss, former lead international kidnapping hostage negotiator for the FBI, to discuss how Congress can break free from political gridlock. Aired on 04/19/2021.

    1. @CasinoVa Beach that is a completely ignorant comment not supported by any news stories I’ve ever heard about her parents who live close to Melania and have been by her side or the last 5 years and probably more.

  1. Thanks for the good explanation of empathy. One does not need to agree to have empathy.

Now, can we teach police to have empathy instead of shooting? Shifting to being trauma informed in all shares of public service is the only thing that’s going to change this world.

    1. Seems empathy is what they train police NOT to have. They’re trained in brute force which is why policing in this country is horrible. Not all, arguably not most, incidents are best addressed by brute force

  2. The GOP senators must have a bigger benefit in voting in favour of a law than sticking together as a group.
But they are basically a cult, which have a very strong group-think.
    It is nearly impossible.
They are not interested in negotiating, they want power, and sticking together gives them power.

    1. That’s my main irk too. At which point is it reasonable to give up trying to negotiate with people who never want to negotiate .. or to compromise.

    2. RogerWilco
Please tell me at any time that Joe Manchin crossed the aisle and voted with the Republicans did the media, the Democrat leadership,
the democrat minion voters praise his name?

    1. Soleil M I have a BETTER question. When is it right for any political party to never negotiate? Never try and “COMPROMISE”
Now go look up the definition of “COMPROMISE” before you respond. In the 8 years Obama was President the ONE time be worked with the Republicans he got SLAMMED
but his fellow Democrats. NEVER did the Democrats try to work with Trump. Even when he had them at the White House and offers deals his own party hated they refused and
made it a talk tough moment with the media. The Democrat left does not want to compromise. They want it all. As a Democrat please tell me exactly what compromise
can be made on any bill on any issue the Democrats write that would make it worth it for Republicans votes? When we are so far apart in political views?

    2. @Soleil M to be honest, I really don;t care about what the rest of the world thinks. They should worry about their country. Now you evidently feel you know what you are talking about. The infrastructure bill the Democrat house passed is filled with a lot of things that has NOTHING to do with building and repairing. They NEVER offered to deal with the House Republicans before they voted for it. Tell me exactly how would you make a deal with the Republicans? What would you offer?

  3. Hey Mr. negotiator, is it possible to rouse or awaken someone who’s only pretending to be sleeping?

  4. Get Chris Voss on again and again and again! All of America needs to hear and learn from this. Thanks, Joshua!

    1. You cannot negotiate with the other side when they are negotiating with completely ulterior goals and motives. Furthermore, negotiations are useless when the other side will continually move every item being negotiated.

  5. If we are actually half as smart as we think we are … we’d be improving our communication skills in the way Chris Voss suggests.

    1. @Alex HamiltonGive me 100 examples of Republicans accepting Democrats proposed compromises. It’s your supposition, so it’s your burden of proof.
Maybe you can start with the Don the Con tax cut bill or the over 400 House bills the the Grim Reaper killed without a vote.

    2. @Suomy Nona since 2008? When the Republicans had control of the House in 2011 they offered to vote for each spending bill one at a time and send to Harry Reid in the Senate when they were negotiating the raising the debt ceiling in October of November. That way nether party could put garbage in the bills that was not needed. Reid refused to put them on the floor for a vote. Trump made several offers on the immigration bill that would have given many illegals a way to citizenship for money for the wall. Pelosi and Schumer rejected them all. Then blame Trump in the media. Obama in 2011 when the Republicans controlled the Senate worked with the Republicans on the final spending bill and it passed with a few democrats voting for it and Obama signed it. He got destroyed by the liberal Democrats in congress for doing it.

    3. @Suomy Nona Now the short answer to your question There is NO bill on ANY Issue
in these days concerning Economic or social issues the Republicans should ever compromise on unless it was a straight bill with no political BS. Other than that you go for the jugular because there is no compromises when one party is to the left and part of the other party is to the right. So Republicans should do what the Democrats are doing now . Go for the complete control. The problem is for the voters is do you give so much power to the Democrats that in time you lose all of your Constitutional rights.

    4. @Alex Hamilton So as expected you couldn’t come up with 100 compromises (or even one). BTW Republicans did have complete control in 2017 and 2018, it’s why voters rejected them in the midterms and again in 2020.
So you think the Democrats should compromise (that’s GQP speak for capitulate) but the Republicans shouldn’t. That’s insane. Thanks for proving by point.

  6. Do yourself a favor and buy his books or watch his master class. This year is your year to level up! You will learn how to neutralize conflict or help with your sales by leading with empathy. When you learn this verbal judo and begin applying it to your life. Then sit back and count your daily life victories. I’m not associated with Chris Voss or the Black Swan Group. His approach made sense and I was already practicing some of his teachings. He’s not some hype man life coach guru. None of that. Just useful knowledge to incorporate in your life.

  7. Great interview! These are highly effective skills we can use in our interactions on a daily basis, but they do require a willingness to listen, to detach, and to suspend judgment… all higher forms of consciousness. Not sure we’re there yet, but we can always “fake it til we make it!”

  8. Used mirroring & labeling in conflict resolution and relationship improvement with adolescents. THEY got it.
