GEOTHERMAL ENERGY IN THE CARIBBEAN ISLANDS PROJECT IN DOMINICA ENTERS NEW PHASE

The Geothermal Energy in the Caribbean Islands Project, funded under the Interreg III B Programme of the European Union, has entered a new phase, following the signing of the Agreement on April 11th 2008 by Minister for Energy, Honourable Charles Savarin.

Geologist Herve Traineau and Geophysicist Nicholas Coppo of the French Geological Survey visited Dominica at the end of May 2008 to undertake tasks Two (2) and Four (4) of the project, which involves geological and geophysical analysis of the project area.

During the performance of Tasks Two (2) and Four (4), additional surveys will be carried out on the Roseau River and River Blanc area, and in the area that extends from Dumas Estate to Morne Micotrin to the Valley of Desolation.  These further geological and geophysical studies will help to confirm the extent of the geothermal reservoir that exists.

The work being done under the Interreg III B project is considered as a preparatory phase for the exploratory drilling programme that will be funded by the European Union and the French Agency for Development (AFD), due to commence prior to the end of the activities under the Interreg III B project in November 2008.

On Wednesday, June 4th 2008, the Geologist and project leader,                       Mr. Herve Traineau presented the project to local stakeholder leaders including, Hon. Charles Savarin, Minister for Public Utilities, Energy and Ports,  Senator the Honourable Dr. Colin McIntyre, Minister for Trade, Industry, Consumer and Diaspora Affairs; Parliamentary Representative for the Roseau Valley constituency, Honourable Norris Charles; Mr. Randolph George, the Chairman of the Wotten Waven Improvement Committee, representatives of the Ministry of Tourism, Legal Affairs and Civil Aviation; Forestry Division; the Physical Planning Division, the Lands and Surveys Division, Invest Dominica Authority, and the Discover Dominica Authority.

This was the first in a series of community sensitization activities to be undertaken over the life of the project.
