They believe if they can get rid of Trump without going against him publicly, they will be able to keep his base and I think they’re right. @Fra Diavolo Well, he’s taken the word of a decorated former KGB agent over that of US intelligence agencies, removed the requirement that American political campaigns report offers of foreign assistance, abandoned US allies in a way that both directly exposed them to harm and will permanently weaken the US’ ability to get allies in the first place, and ignored that little thing about Russia offering bounties for the deaths of US troops overseas.

The main tool that has been deployed for decades is voter suppression.
Close your local polling station – moving your local polling station further away. That may mean having to find transport, hoping you’ve been directed to the correct polling station and are willing to wait in hours long queues because it is so heavily overloaded. Wouldn’t you rather just stay home?
Purge the voters roll – if your name’s not down you can’t cast a vote. The party in charge may come up with and apply stringent and banal rules to remove groups of voters who typically don’t vote for them. You may ensnare some of your own voters but it’s worth it to remove swathes of your opposition.
Gerrymandering – drawing the electoral districts to heavily favour one party. Your vote doesn’t mean much if you’re a liberal in a mostly conservative district and you want to vote conservative for a change, equally it would need a large swing of conservatives to return a liberal.
Disinformation – sending out contradictory information about where and when to vote. If you go at the wrong time or place you can’t vote.
Somewhere in there Russia might be able to influence who you vote for. The GOP refuse to block it because “every little helps”.
