  1. Obey the rules Yes 💯but only in Jamaica student is locked out check over in different Caribbean islands they have rules but can’t by no mean deny your child of education.

  2. When it’s not one thing, it’s another. Some of these rules are antiquated and backwards. Jamaica is a tropical island, you can’t expect pupils to wear skirts almost touching their ankles. It’s not the ice ages. We had a heat wave here few weeks ago and all pupils were allowed to wear shorts and T-shirts to school. That’s what separates a first world county from a dictatorship. Focus on the right thing which is education for all regardless of their clothes or hairstyles.

    1. While I agree that there must be discipline and order, the length of the uniform isn’t the issue. This down to the ankle is excess! Have you seen what some of the teachers are wearing these days? No tight pants fine BUT be balance some of the clothes are custom made and boys can be of different sizes.

    2. Don’t compare apples and oranges. I definitely don’t want Jamaica to be following another country’s supposed school structure, especially if that structure has many loop holes, even when they aren’t related to “uniform”. Why, because everything is connected and plays a role in children’s growth and education.
Respect discipline and rules, that’s the message. Rules can be amended, it takes discipline to engage and discuss such matters, rather than vulgarity (which took place over this incident).
As a female, taking necessary steps to protect oneself, especially in a society where morals and discipline is being loss is important and crucial. I have experienced where the manner in which I dress keeps unwanted preys away, compared to others.
We are harping about the length of a uniform and not looking at the root cause. So we get loud before we have a discussion to find a common ground.
Don’t know if you are from this country, but it would help for you to understand that not all cultures and behaviours are the same and “one size does not fit all”.

    3. Singapore became a first world country under a dictatorship. Singapore forbids anyone from eating chewing gum in the public space and for good reasons-however some people may see this as being harsh and unreasonable. Schools not only have grooming rules for students but also for their staff. “The ruin of a people/nation begins in the home” (Afrikan Proverb). What goes around, comes around. It shouldn’t be surprizing that these youths who are being coached into anti-social behaviour later turn around and diss their own parents-what goes around comes around. All of these adults who have a problem with the school’s rule for grooming when they go to these foreign embassy to get a visa do they have any problem with their rules???-no, they conform and dare not try to impose any “HOOD RAT MENTALITY” on them. Some of those people who are opposing school rules are the ones who are coming from homes & communities in which there is no “order & civility”.

    4. I appreciate your feedback to my comment; all those for and against. Thank you for your input. You’ve made some valid points. As a single mother of three wonderful and industrious children, I’m here to enlighten you that what a child wears to school is irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. What matters is that they attend and excel through adversity and challenges. We need to have dialogue and agree and disagree with each other respectfully, as you’ve all demonstrated. My first son is an Electrical Engineer. My daughter just qualified from University as a Teacher and my last son got 15 subjects including 9 A stars. I hold a foundation degree in Business Management, have my own company, is a Director and is going for my Batchelors of Science (BSc) and will gain it within a year. We are all Jamaicans living in the UK. Let’s have peace and love. Life is too short. Blessings ✌🏽

  3. It’s not the now for locking pupils out of schools get parents in with pupils and have a meeting letting everyone understand the school dress code

  4. I strongly believe in discipline and rules, but in the first place why did parents accept these rules if we did know that they r rubbish. What the length of a girl uniform have to do with learning. All the female teachers dem need to start wear the long dresses and skirts to class, and the male teachers dem need to wear the big ugly pants dem before they start turning back kids from school for dress code. When I look at some of the girls uniform not even Christians don’t wear clothe long so. And worst of all they look so disgusting in some of them. Maddam u need to come straight and tell these principals to stop it.

    1. I’m an educator and I strongly believe in discipline and adherence to school rules but this is too much!!! Set rules for male & female teacher attire. Let the female teachers wear ankle length shirts and dresses and go back to wearing stockings. The Minister of Education should also set the example and only wear ankle length dresses and skirts. Practice what you preach minister.

  5. Education is the highest standard of learning. I understand that students needs to be disciplined but even unruly things happen in parliament which is a government establishment so please don’t deny the students their rights to learn sometimes the parents can’t even afford to give their kids a haircut every minute because that money is use to send the kids to school which is more important. Teachers also needs discipline because sometimes how they talk to kids it’s unprofessional so live is all about give and take

    1. I gave you a like. You’re right about most thing. But if these schoolers refused to wear the appropriate attire, SEND THEM HOME. This doesn’t have anything to do with hair cut. It is about tight short skirts and tight Pants. When these same Girls are harassed and abducted by grown men that’s another story. They need to cover themselves properly. SEND THEM HOME!!

  6. If the gunman them did more discipline them would get away with murder more often. If the government did more discipline parents would be able to offer thier kids more discipline. Give us more money when we work because we not seeing all the taxes that we pay and that would bring more discipline because our kids seeing we are working and not getting enough pay so.why do they think discipline is important if their parents not gaining anything for their hard work. Government needs to restructured ECT……

  7. We focus on the wrong things in jamaica…that’s y we are 20 years behind…..I teach in engand where the girls wear the shortest skirts….it doesn’t affect their ability to learn

    1. Both cultures are different. I don’t think we can compare the two. It’s certainly interesting times. We have to weigh the odds and decide on the best course for all. Indiscipline is rife in Jamaica. Dunno if students in the UK are as rambunctious and obnoxious as ours here. Our people’s mindset is different. Bad behaviors and indiscipline is contagious. Give these kids an inch they will take a mile. But I also think we have weak classroom and school management systems. These have to be developed to meet the challenges of schooling and governing the new generation. The old ways are collapsing.

  8. The children have become the parents they do whatever they want and that’s what causing the problem no one wants to obey rules

  9. You all talking about discipline yet unu a fight in a parliament, focus on the bigger picture. While there is a right or wrong way I stand up for discipline I understand the views of the principal However it is too much, three inches below the knees is good for students with a high bam bam it can go a bit longer However it doesn’t matter how long the uniform is the sexual predators are out there so let’s educate our children. Parents and teachers must work together in order to achieve this goal.

    1. Excellent arguments! I taught in Jamaica up to 1999 and the girls uniforms were not way down their ankles. I was shocked to see how long they are now. Rules should make sense! These hypocrites who lead the country just need to go fix their own parliament

  10. When I look at these comments, I can see that our standards as Jamaicans have fallen. All of us used to go to school, these rules have not affected us in any way, we still learn, graduate and live our life, no problem at all. Mi see people a talk bout tax, yet many of you have to abide by dress codes at work or you get sent home. In 1st world countries, people have more bills than the days of the week and even with all the benefits, they have 10 times more problems than us. I for one am grateful that these are the small issues we have to deal with, which would not be a issue at all 10 years ago, because our self worth was higher then.

  11. Same Way Soh Faval! I Stand In Solidarity With The Teacher’s & Principal’s In Instilling Some Disciplines In The School’s So That The Children Them Can Grow With Some Good Moral’s

  12. I agree totally with Alando Terrelonge speach. It makes a lot of sense. And school administration should focus an building intellectual minds as opposed to be policing students of their outer garments. Fayval Williams, I can’t change your mindset but I can tell you your views are wrong and you should be focusing more on more important things

  13. Great speech Minister – support principals and schools when they stand up for discipline. If we don’t, society gwaan to the dogs

  14. The ministry should set a standard and not let the schools have full reign on what is acceptable. Everyone has differing views and that will give us a situation where one school says at your ankles while another says at your knees. Set a standard applicable to all schools and that will make it practical. I personally do not see what a student /school gains from a uniform at the ankles as opposed to the knees. I am all for discipline and following school rules as I did when I was a student and which my son has to do now as a student being parented by me. However, if I had a daughter I would have a strong opposition to purchasing the additional material needed to facilitate the length of some of these uniforms. Administrators please take note that this comes at a cost to the parents and it is not a preventative method to being preyed on. I would like to know the efforts Godfrey Stewart is making in improving the Csec results ranking to bring it up from the low percentage it current is at and how this is being policed for effectiveness.

  15. Individuals should be careful of postings on Social Media.People put things to suit their own interests and agenda.Parents should be happy that this principal is helping and providing guidance to the children. Keep them home if you don’t want the “teacher’s guidance and support. Children live what they learn, and many times some parents are not showing up when invited to meetings or interviews to give their input / suggestions for their children. Now you know why Jamaica is producing children or young people without respect for authority. Uniform was a must growing up in Ja and each school had their style/ pattern requirements.
