It’s not the President’s job to request investigations on private US citizens, ESPECIALLY not on political rivals and ESPECIALLY not from foreign governments who have less due process than here in the United States. This should concern EVERY American, the President is NOT an authoritarian.
It would be obvious to anyone that a President should be impeached and removed from office if they had requested an investigation on a political opponent who is a member of the political party that you support.
It’s the Department of Justice and the FBI’s job to approve investigations on individuals when there is probable cause to do so. Clearly there wasn’t in this case, otherwise the Department of Justice would’ve been investigating Joe Biden and the DNC. But it seems Trump wanted to create the conditions that sailed him to victory in the 2016 election, with the announcement of a public investigation on (at the time) his top political rival. Otherwise, how else do you explain this? Trump was only pursuing corruption? And yet failed to name a single other individual or company he asked Ukraine to investigate when asked in the aftermath. He even had ample time to come up with names but when asked again, yet again failed to come up with a single other name.
If such behavior is normalized, I suppose you all would be okay with a Democratic President requesting investigations from the UK, Germany, Australia, Canada, Japan, China, to investigate their top Republican opponent? Because in supporting Trump’s behavior, to quote Tucker Carlson in an op-ed (likely because he was too afraid to do so in his show) wrote that a President requesting a foreign government to investigate their political opponents “sets the precedent” for the United States to become “just another of the world’s many corrupt countries”.
You can support his policies, but this kind of behavior should NEVER be tolerable if you believe that authoritarianism should ever be a concern in the United States. If you voted for Trump, this is NOT what you elected him to do. At the very least, such behavior would have obvious consequences.
