When Ian Manuel was 13, he shot a woman during a robbery. Although she survived, he was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole, and served 18 consecutive years in solitary confinement. CNN's Michael Smerconish talks to Manuel about how he survived and was granted his release.

They can ask for protective custody if they are threatened. But protective custody is not Segregated Housing. Not solitary confinement. Prison is prison. People get put in Segregated Housing for one reason and one reason only. They are a threat to institutional security. This guy is a predator. He would never spend this amount of time in SHU unless he had REPEATEDLY committed violent acts. You don’t have any idea what you’re talking about. 😂

This story illustrates how broken the world is. 18 years in solitary is the definition of cruel. There’s no justice. I hope Ian continues to heal and knows how amazingly strong he is for surviving. We must do more to fix the criminal injustice system.

Man debbie has a forgiving heart. Bless her. Yh if you sont have mental health before going to jail then solitary confinement will make sure you leave jail with mental health. Its inhumane. Some would argue that’s what you get for breaking the law. But imagine being locked 8n a room for 18 years. Dam. That’s hell right there

It shows how good his heart is that when asked about Debbie he still wanted to acknowledge so many others. It just goes to show how there are many people in prison that could do good in the world of only given a chance. For those who say there are bad people in prison I say there are plenty of people free who do even worse… they just do it in a suit and tie.

So sad to hear his whole family died as he remained in solitary. Even his brother… Amazing strength in this guy.
I know what solitary confinement is like. Mostly as a juvenile. It was terrible. Maybe a shower a week. Never stepping out of the cell, but for that. Nothing in the cell but an old wool blanket, no mattress. On steel. The most I did was 6 months at a time. I cannot imagine 18 years like that. God bless you and keep you.
