How he survived 18 years in solitary confinement

When Ian Manuel was 13, he shot a woman during a robbery. Although she survived, he was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole, and served 18 consecutive years in solitary confinement. CNN's Michael Smerconish talks to Manuel about how he survived and was granted his release.

  1. Some things are worse than death, this being one of them, people don’t recognize how mentally tough this guy is

    1. This is one man who has survived this ordeal. How many others are there who are trying to survive or who didn’t survive. This is barbarous. No society can call itself ”civilized” if it does this to kids or adults.

    2. @Margaret Nicol – This is America. Don’t catch you slippin now.

The moment you stop working, and no longer a positive to society, America has zero problem flushing you down the toilet.

    3. @Mark Ruiz You sound like a professional angry Prison guard.
He could also be in solitary for the simple fact that he was young and vulnerable. Maybe a possible victim in gen pop.
You’re way too comfortable calling people “animals “.
You must be an abusive law enforcement officer.

    4. @Einstein Rosen Bridge #86 Dumbass. People don’t get put in any form of solitary confinement in Prison because they’re “young and vulnerable”. 😂. Or old and vulnerable or anything and vulnerable. They can ask for protective custody if they are threatened. But protective custody is not Segregated Housing. Not solitary confinement. Prison is prison. People get put in Segregated Housing for one reason and one reason only. They are a threat to institutional security. This guy is a predator. He would never spend this amount of time in SHU unless he had REPEATEDLY committed violent acts. You don’t have any idea what you’re talking about. 😂

  2. I know I would have lost it, hell I’m losing it right now during this lockdown. Props to this brotha for never giving up.

    1. @CanisXV he got what he deserved. He should have thought that before he committed the crime. Why should we feel mercy for him, he did not have any remorse when he committed the crime.

    2. CNN should do a story on the man that was let out of prison after serving 17 years for killing his mother, and on his first day out he beats up an Asian woman. Real BLM right there

  3. This story illustrates how broken the world is. 18 years in solitary is the definition of cruel. There’s no justice. I hope Ian continues to heal and knows how amazingly strong he is for surviving. We must do more to fix the criminal injustice system.

    1. @Jill-of- All-Trades Are you saying countries like France, Spain and Italy are uncivilized?

  4. I can’t imagine going through what this dude did, going through his formative years in prison totally alone. Glad to see he’s come through and is doing great things. Props brother!

    1. Dont want to go through it do not shoot someone! I have no remorse for him. And he should not be allowed to profit from it.

    2. Charges you rack up In prison never hit the news.
It is bad with government, they just make sh!t up & their the “heros”.

  5. That poem it incredible. I am so sorry for what you went through. Congratulations on turning your life around. 🙂🙏🏼

    2. Sure thing Joe and not just for psychology, for anyone seeking meaning in their life. Forget the Pixxie Snot, just a troll.

  7. Man debbie has a forgiving heart. Bless her. Yh if you sont have mental health before going to jail then solitary confinement will make sure you leave jail with mental health. Its inhumane. Some would argue that’s what you get for breaking the law. But imagine being locked 8n a room for 18 years. Dam. That’s hell right there

  8. I cry for the loss of the 15 year old who could have been amazing. The 39 year old is amazing but they are 2 different people who should have been 1

    1. @J Barnhart how the RepubliCons like to spend it. You have got to be joking or just have your head stuck up your arse. The Democrats just pushed a 1.9 trillion dollar spending spree. 1.9 trillion dollars and looking to spend 3 trillion more

  9. 🙏🏼What a testimony! May God continue to bless you, Debbie, the lawyers and social workers, and all those who worked so hard to give you another chance at life! Be a blessing to someone else, and keep the faith!

  10. This has to bring you to tears. Beautiful poetry and beautiful people. Imagination and creativity kept him alive. I will always believe and witness to the fact that every man, woman, and child are indeed made in the image of the Divine God. To honor Him, we must treat one another as we want to be treated. Thanks, for his release and this interview. Blessings 🕊️

  11. It shows how good his heart is that when asked about Debbie he still wanted to acknowledge so many others. It just goes to show how there are many people in prison that could do good in the world of only given a chance. For those who say there are bad people in prison I say there are plenty of people free who do even worse… they just do it in a suit and tie.

  12. Wow 👏seriously God bless him for being so strong and amazing 👏after all that time I’d be broken

  13. That poem and his recital of it was beautiful! You’re still standing young man and you’re taking advantage of a 2nd lease on life!

  14. That poem made me cry. What strength this man must possesses. Incredible triumph over unimaginable cruelty xx

  15. So sad to hear his whole family died as he remained in solitary. Even his brother… Amazing strength in this guy.

  16. I know what solitary confinement is like. Mostly as a juvenile. It was terrible. Maybe a shower a week. Never stepping out of the cell, but for that. Nothing in the cell but an old wool blanket, no mattress. On steel. The most I did was 6 months at a time. I cannot imagine 18 years like that. God bless you and keep you.
