How The U.S. Right Is Having Its 'Hippie Phase'

    1. As a resident in Humboldt County, I am surrounded by the original hippies. We are considerate and loving people. William is correct! There is absolutely nothing “the right wing” has in common with the hippies!

    2. Anyone who remembers the “Question Authority” bumper stickers should realize how destructive that attitude, and the idea that everyone has their own truth, is.

    3. I live in Northern California in Humboldt County. Yes I have lived in communes and grown marijuana. I am too young to be an original hippie, I am surrounded by the Original Hippies who came up here from Haight Ashbury to get away from hard drugs! I want to enlighten you all that there is NO correlation or belief system shared by the right wing and the Hippies! NONE!! Lynard Skynard were not hippies. I have never lived in such a politically involved area as here! We are disgusted with Trumpism. Hippies do care about Trumpism but we also care about many horrible things such as our planet being destroyed by climate change, as an example. We think globally. We do care about what Trumpism is doing but there are many wrongs being done in the world. I promise you that Trump will not matter when we go into an Ice Age. What kind of world are we living leaving our great grandchildren? The only thing punks have in common with hippies is going against the grain. Joe, I really like you, but there are many many hippies who do not partake of marijuana and have been the ground zero in the organic movement and healthy eating habits that even the right wing has happily adopted. Marijuana has been accepted as the medicine it always was. Thanks to people like my good friend Jack Herer who wrote “The Emporer Wears No Clothes, who tried to tell everyone the good news about marijuana and the lies that were told! We live extremely healthy life styles. Using that line from Sweet Home Alabama about Watergate , has nothing to do with hippies. We do passionately care about social injustices . Before you define a belief system take some time to update the definitions! I am 63 and if you haven’t noticed, the hippies have grown up. Thank goodness you have Mika in your life to balance you.

    1. @MyndGod AndPsyche “my body my choice”. Who knew MyndGod AndPsyche is a big proponent of women’s reproductive rights?

    2. @Trump will never be President again Q is stupid Go cry to mommy snowflake. Poor child.

    3. @The Truth Hurts You! During the December 27, 2020, call, Trump pressured Rosen and Donoghue to falsely declare the election “illegal” and “corrupt” even after the Justice Department had not uncovered evidence of widespread voter fraud.
“Just say that the election was corrupt + leave the rest to me and the R. Congressmen,” Trump said on the call, according to Donoghue’s notes.

“These handwritten notes show that President Trump directly instructed our nation’s top law enforcement agency to take steps to overturn a free and fair election in the final days of his presidency,” House Oversight Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney said in a statement.
      Potential testimony

    4. @The Truth Hurts You! ‘You guys may not be following the internet the way I do’
Donoghue’s notes show how Trump continued to push false claims of voter fraud in several states. Trump said that “people are angry” and blaming the Justice Department for inaction, suggesting that — blaming DOJ + for inaction.”

“We have an obligation to tell people that this was an illegal, corrupt election,” Trump said, according to the notes.
Rosen and Donoghue’s pushed back, telling Trump “We are doing our job. Much of the info you’re getting is false,” according to Donoghue’s notes. The notes included a reference to Trump’s false claim that the error rate of ballot counting in Michigan was 68%, when in fact it was 0.0063%, or one-in-15,000.

    5. The Hippies were progressive, pro tolerance, for racial and sosial justice, pro womens rights, pro a womans right to choose, agains the establishment, against raceism, against fascism, for love and peace, against war etc. And no, they didn´t dress the same and listened to the same music. They were pro individualism and against authoritarianism. They were mostly educated young people.

So pretty much the complete opposite of conservative trumpers.

    1. **JOE IS FORGETTING ABOUT THE CIVIL RIGHTS ACT,,,, THAT MOTIVATED MUCH OF THE SOUTH TO GO REPUBLICAN!!!!! HE’S CONVENIENTLY IGNORING REALITY!!!!**

    2. @Dog Poo Fairy Please point to any source showing the law course Critical Race Theory talks about babies.

    3. @Dog Poo Fairy And we’re supposed to take comments like that seriously form a person who calls his/her/themself “Dog Poo Fairy”? You need to hire yourself a good PR person if you have plans on becoming a serious social media influencer. I’m just speculating.

    4. @Dog Poo Fairy Not all Neo-Fascist organizations tout white supremacy as a goal, but that still doesn’t make them good people. Also, Tarrio doesn’t identify as Black, but rather Afro-Cuban, which may mean he he has West or Central African ancestry, but it could also just mean he is Cuban and part of the AFRO-Cuban cultural movement. Comrade, your mistakes are showing.

    1. Hippies were the antithesis of the nasty, hateful, Reichpublicans. It’s insulting to even compare the two ideologies.

    2. The American right-wing today have more in common with Lincoln’s assassin John Wilkes Booth, Charles Manson and the Manson Family.

  1. Hippies weren’t particularly “anti-science”- I remember posters promoting psychedelics saying “better living through chemistry”. Saying hippies and punks all “dressed alike” is like saying “all Chinese look alike” or something similar.

    1. How about the “Question Authority” bumper stickers, or the “I’ve got my own truth, man” crap? A lot of the original anti-vaccination idiots were former hippies, who just didn’t trust experts.

    2. This guy Kevin Williamson’s half-baked take widely misses the mark. It’s quite trash. If he had instead compared them to Charles Manson and the Manson Family then he would have been getting somewhere that makes some sense.

    3. @Deborah Freedman Most or the majority of hippies did that and to the same extreme as MAGA CHUDs? No. There’s also a massive difference between “Question Authority” and following a cult of personality. Very bad take you’re got there, lacking critical thinking. The far more apt comparison would be to Charles Manson and the Manson Family. //No, Manson wasn’t a hippie. 🤦🏻‍♂️

  2. It’s called Adult Oppositional Defiant Disorder. That’s all it is. The GOP and 74 million of them.

    1. So they need to be beaten? That’s what they do to their kids so

    2. I don’t really see the need to give a weird-sounding medical term to 74 million people…
… who are tribal, racist, and endorse mob violence.

  3. It’s not a phase. It’s a lifetime commitment to pure idiocy.

    1. @YTPartyTonight Unfortunately, and obviously, MSNBC is not perfect. However, they are a million times better than Fox FAKE so-called News. 🙂

    2. BTW, I know one thing for sure, they were not anti-science. Many were university-educated chemists! They made things like 3,4,5-trimethoxyphenethylamine. Trust on this. _I KNOW!_ Heh heh!

    3. @YTPartyTonight I don’t usually watch Morning Joe, but from what I have seen I know he is intelligent, although too often long-winded. The only thing I can deduce is this segment was a strict producer decision. I have never even cared about the producer, so I know nothing about him/her. I wonder the years of age? Anyway, whatever the age, totally ignorant about hippies.

  4. U guys are all confused on this vid. Rs are not hippies, Skynyrd was a southern rock band not punk and Ronnie VanZant was only joking with Neil Young they knew each other

    1. @Deborah Freedman You’re clueless and confused. You probably think Manson was a hippie, too.

    2. @mike briganti yeah, no. Most hippies in the 60’s were Liberals. And Conservatives HATED them.

    3. The Hippies were progressive, for racial and sosial justice, pro womens rights, pro a womans right to choose, agains the establishment, against raceism, against fascism, for love and peace, against war etc. And no, they didn´t dress the same and listened to the same music. They were pro individualism and against authoritarianism. They were mostly educated young people.

So pretty much the complete opposite of conservative trumpers.

  5. Less “hippie phase”, more “second childhood phase”. The hippies were mostly young people, often educated—this bunch are mostly old, bitter, angry men and women, with very limited education. Which is why the “answers” always involve violence. Always.

    1. @NPC #1138 – Honorary Rooftop Korean lol no BLM/Antifa are definitely not modern day hippies, in fact they’re more like fascist blackshirts. Hippies didn’t go around punching people and throwing molotov cocktails. They also didn’t attack black conservatives either.

    2. @Dog Poo Fairy Every one of my Marine Corps brothers who ever stormed a beach is ANTIFASCIST. We remain so.

      Death to authoritarians.

    3. @Overpowered by Funk. surely your Marine Corps brothers are anti communist too, especially as communism has murdered far more than fascism and is a far bigger threat to democracy. You should be against the Marxist BLM organisation and Antifa, and anyone who defends them.

    4. These people behave like rotten teenages, worse than actual teenages these days. Their behaviour actually strongly suggests that their prefrontal cortexes never fully matured between the ages of 17 and 21.

  6. Suggesting that Nazis are like hippies is absurd and idiotic, especially when the USA is in the midst of a crisis that looks set to end in self-destruction.

    1. “I was in the back seat and I got pulled out the trunk,” Shen said. “They kept saying if we didn’t give them everything they would take us.”

    2. When I read the title of the clip, a mish-mash quote started running through my head “Free love under will is the whole of the law.”

That said, I would pay decent money to see MGT after a few bong hits.

  7. Only someone on the far right could come up with a comparison of MAGArats and hippies. Just off the top of my head hippies were about love and tolerance, neither is something wit which you could associate Trumpets.

    1. Wasn’t Charles Manson going on and on about Helter Skelter and what not.

    2. @NPC #1138 – Honorary Rooftop Korean Manson wasn’t a hippie. Jesus Christ, that’s a stupid comment. 🤦🏻‍♂️

  8. How can Fascists be Hippies??? That makes absolutely no sense. Just like everything about Trump World.

    1. @Reese Eifler so you’re saying providing papers proving you received a vaccine isn’t a fascist thing todo?

    2. @Laz Coroner It’s insulting that you think I can’t see what’s happening in the US. You can’t see the forest for the Trees, if you take a step back you might see what’s actually happening in your own country. I want to know, when Trump spews his insane, blatantly disprovable lies, do you just think “Well, it must be true because Trump said it”?? He is THE most dishonest person in modern history. Notice that the news outlets on the Right never explain anything, they never tell you the details, it’s all propaganda.

    3. Trump was just as low down in hippie days as he is is.now.I did not know any hippie that said they could stand on 5th Ave and shoot someone and get away with it.

    5. @Laz Coroner Requiring people to abide by bonafide public health rules that will save lives has absolutely ZERO correlation to fascism. No one has a legal or Constitutionally guaranteed right to be a vector for a highly communicable and fatal disease and/or a right to put other people’s health and safety at risk. Therefore I think it’s pretty obvious you need to re-study the history and nature of fascism.

  9. I am 72 (from Europe) and the title alone on this piece is an insult to all former hippies! Please do not compare us to imbeciles, insurrectionists and so forth! We may have been naive, but utopian so …

  10. No respectable hippie would endanger others. It was the Yippies who were the violent faction.✌

  11. So Joe’s parents were the old style Democrats. Guess the southern strategy worked well on them.
