At first I agreed with the soldier and only following commands, then I remembered a lesson from my time in the military. To the question of “what do we do if a superior orders us to do something illegal?” Response from the staff sergeant was to not do it and ask repeated confirmation, stalling basically.
Not sure how well that works under pressure, as the general here pointed out.

We never punished foot soldiers for following orders only higher ups that really had some discretion in the matter.
‘Just following orders’ wasn’t a successful defense at Nuremberg; it shouldn’t be a defense in Ukraine.
Eh, always keep in mind it is the EXPLOITERS (“bosses”) who deserve little if any leniency.
Depending on the details of the specific case, yes, if deserves punishment, but also to be viewed fairly in light of the specific circumstances. For example, most of the lower level people are heavily propagandized and may indeed have thought they were fighting for a noble cause. Even their direct commanders may well think that much of the propaganda is true.
Further, ask yourself: if you were being pressured by higher-ups with far more power who might, for example, even have sway to use your family, let’s say, as hostages… what would you do?
The people at the top, however, deserve no quarter. They should all be branded as wanted and tried at the ICC ASAP if caught. Further, I see absolutely no reason to not try to … remove any of them “from circulation” if possible … without a trial.
As a non-Russian, even if given the opportunity (0% chance of this), it’s a tricky call perhaps (meddling in that way in the affairs of another country and possibly giving them actually TRUE info to use in their propaganda, not that it’s likely to buy them much externally) … If I were Russian, knew what was really going on, and had the opportunity, I wouldn’t think twice if the target were high up enough … Even if they used it for propaganda (which they would).
The only way I’ll accept “just following orders” is if these soldiers follow to a point—and then they try to stop following those orders or otherwise resist. And we’ve seen both happening with the Russians.

In our military by contrast, our members are trained to be thinkers as well as fighters. What Russian generals are tasked with; the US military gives those tasks to more junior officers.
But what the Russians really lack is a dedicated Corps of NCOs, the institutional glue of any military.
If Officers were the brains, and the Enlistees the muscles, the NCOs are the vital organs.

There are many reports of russian commanders killing conscripts who don’t follow orders. It’s not just a possibility that he might get punished, it’s very likely that he gets killed by his own men if he doesn’t obey. Of course, that should not be an excuse for his deeds, but saying he could freely choose is just not true.

That should make people wonder why so many politicians want Ukraine in NATO and have been so willing to push us to the brink of WW 3 for Ukraine.
3. Ukraine being in NATO is not worth risking WW 3, a world wide food shortage, significantly strengthening China (who is our real enemy and not Russia), and risking the US dollar no longer being the world’s reserve currency over. If you think it is you either have a brain the size of a pea or a death wish.
4. Tell Zelensky, Poroshenko, and all the other cheerleaders of this war to go fight the Russians themselves.
5. Even in the darkest days of the Cold War at the time of the Cuban missile crisis you could explain (and would want to understand) the position of your adversary. You would want to know what he is thinking and maybe try to find a way to diffuse the situation. That is the opposite of what these MSM buffoons (and the buffoons here accusing everyone who disagrees with them of being a “Russian asset” or a “Putin stooge”) of doing.

@Acaelus Monsoon I generally would not recommend simply using Wikipedia but there is an entire articles on “Corruption in Ukraine” there so you can search that to begin with.
A big part of my “schitck” in my professional is “always, always, always check into the references”. In this case, the references are pretty food”. The Guardian is not a reputable news outlet but this left wing paper looked into the issue circa 2012-2017 with an article and a survey on the issue and they conclude that also. I say “also” as I could swear there was an IMF (International Monetary Fund) study on this issue and they came to the same conclusion a few years back. I am going to do a full search on them but it’s 1:30 a.m. so I will do a fuller search tomorrow and Sunday if necessary.
I hate seeing Ukraine and Ukrainians suffer so horrifically as they are doing now but much of the blame does indeed belong to NATO despite the fact that is a “heretical” viewpoint to many here in the West. It’s more evidence of how propagandistic many people have become and become unwittingly.
Putin is not the first tyrant who fancied himself a peerless military leader.

This isn’t new however. Western, more specifically the US military utilizes a decentralized command structure which gives field-level command elements the ability to make decisions, whereas Russia (and old Soviets) use a more centralized command structure. This is evident in how this war has gone for them. They’re very slow to adapt to what’s happening on the battlefield and keep running into the same ambushes and getting air assets shot down in their same areas of operation.

It is obviously not commendable that the young man, a soldier killed. It is though commendable that he expressed, repentance and accepted his accountability, responsibility of guilt. This is the best news we have had in a while. First the despot gets bad info from a corrupt military – because it is better to lie to him. Then he starts to get rid of those who tell him the truth. Then he decides he has to “do it himself.” Perfect. The more clueless he becomes, the better for his opponents.
I remember during the opening weeks of this war, there were people all over these comments sections saying, _”oh, don’t believe the media, Putin is a strategic genius, Russia is winning and everything in this war is going just as Putin planned!”_
Those people seem to have quieted down lately.
Hitler did the same thing towards the end of WWII. When the allies were planning to target Hitler himself, they decided not to go ahead, because it was better to let him carry on making mistakes than to have the German generals making military decisions on their own, which would prolong the war. That worked out best for Europe, because if the war in Europe had lasted three months longer, the third atomic bomb would have been dropped over Germany.
The moment Hitler began making tactical decisions over his generals the Nazi war effort was doomed.
