  1. Jamaica has never had a more qualified and competent Finance Minister. This man Nigel Clarke is one of the few persons in public administration that deserves to be referred to as The Honourable . He is a true visionary who believes in business process within government.

    1. @Independent Cyou cannot show results. Name one thing he’s done that’s changed the game in the economy. In an effort to be able to say “no new tax”, The dollar has slid under him, causing the cost of living to skyrocket, there’s been no significant overall growth, poverty has not been reduced under him, Jamaica has not been manufacturing anything cause his focus is on the dying tourism sector. So apart from his gimmicks, i want you to tell me where’s the positive results.

    2. @DonCorledopey remember that the dollar was floated by Michael Manley in the 1990s without first retooling the Jamaican economy. That decision put Jamaican producers in an uncompetitive position. That strategy plus the actions by UAWU in particular drove out businesses out of Jamaica and wrecked the whole sugar industry, chased out Goodyear, Colgate and many others. The key principle behind a floating dollar is that when the J$ dollar slides then our goods will become more price competitive and thus Foreigners will demand more. As they demand more jamaican goods, the Jamaican dollar will appreciate. apart from interventions by the BoJ, the minister of finance is not in control of the dollar. You, and I by making our choice in goods and services are the ones who are deciding the exchange rate. I am not saying that the MoF is a messiah, I am saying that he is implementing systems/governance framework that will give Jamaica a fighting chance.

    3. @Independent C all of that doesn’t matter. I want you to give me an example of results to prove he’s the best finance minister as you have crowned him. There’s nothing more than gimmicks. You’re purely impressed by his jargons. I realized he’s clueless when he said in the debate that his plan to stabilize the dollar would be to take from the reserves. That’s the stupidest answer anyone could come up with, but his supporters thought that was genius. You guys are obviously impressed with his jargons, cause this man nave no sense if he thinks continually taking from your reserves is a good way to strengthen the jmd

    4. @DonCorledopey sir, there are many MoF before Nigel. Please tell me what legislative changes they have brought about? The fact that Nigel implement legislation that takes the BoJ from under his own control is monumental. The fact that the BoJ has made profits for three consecutive years is noteworthy. Look, we are moving to a digital currency – do you know how much money that will save the Jamaican people? We no longer need to pay the Canadian Mint and Thomas DelAru to print notes and coins. No new taxes in a recession and a pandemic, the abolition of the asset tax are all our achievements that was and is being lead by Nigel. Take the partisan scales off your eyes and see my brother.

    5. @Independent C no new taxes is not an accomplishment when you’re making profit from squeezing the life outta the less fortunate. if he managed to not bring in new taxes without utility bills and down to price of the basic necessities totally skyrocketing then I’d be impressed. what he did with this no new tax claim is like throwing water out of one cup into the other. no new taxes are needed when yuh grab money from the ppl other ways. he’s a good con artist i can tell u dat. him con u, not me though.

  2. Nigel,
You can fix the variability in income for the same public sector employee. Do what Canada does and set up a national skill classification code. Thus all plumbers will have a specific skill code as will all doctors, nurses etc.

  3. The call of wisdom

Wisdom cries aloud in the street, in the markets she raises her voice; at the head of the noisy streets she cries out; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks: “How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing and fools hate knowledge? If you turn at my reproof, behold, I will pour out my spirit to you; I will make my words known to you. Because I have called and you refused to listen, have stretched out my hand and no one has heeded, because you have ignored all my counsel and would have none of my reproof, I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when terror strikes you, when terror strikes you like a storm and your calamity comes like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you. Then they will call upon me, but I will not answer; they will seek me diligently but will not find me. Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the Lord , would have none of my counsel and despised all my reproof, therefore they shall eat the fruit of their way, and have their fill of their own devices. For the simple are killed by their turning away, and the complacency of fools destroys them; but whoever listens to me will dwell secure and will be at ease, without dread of disaster.”
    Proverbs 1:20‭-‬33

  4. Sadly these benefits and policies doesn’t trickle down to the average citizen. Whilst gct was supposably increased, that same is true for inflation. Prices on consumer goods have skyrocketed.

  5. I would like to hear of more microeconomic policies geared at small businesses, farmers, and other entrepreneurs. Also these microeconomic policies should work in tandem with macroeconomics frameworks, for example I would like to see an actual crime action plan that works in conjunction with unemployment initiatives and other social programs. Looking or rather focussing only on macroeconomic policies will not benefit the average citizen, as macroeconomics looks at the economy as an whole by aggregating the different industries productivity. It should be noted that not every industry needs to perform positively to garner positive results for the economy, and we have seen this, Jamaica’s economy is dependent on tourism and remittances with other industries contributing a lesser percentage of GDP. A growing economy that’s is largely affected by crime and other microeconomics problems will forever regress, even if there exist instances of growth and thus the government should seek to add more microeconomic policies to their fiscal policies.
