Seniors today have their Medicare paid for out of one pocket, but they get to select who administers the plan that they choose. It could be a standard insurance, an HMO, a PPO, or standard Medicare. Other countries have far more experience than we do at this point, and that’s our own fault. Other’s know how to handle the financing, where to see the greatest return on investment, and statistically which managed care efforts will bring the most positive results. In Detroit, in1965, I was paying health claims for a major insurance company. The only ones in America with adequate insurance were Congress, those accepted by the Veterans Administration, those covered by automotive union contracts and two HMO’s (Kiezer and Mayo). It was clear then that America desperately needed a National Healthcare Plan. I was a sweet young thing then. Now, I’m using one of the many HMO’s available under Medicare. Americans have allowed ourselves to be led around like jackasses for the last 50 years. Instead of confronting the issues of what we do and do not want in our National Healthcare Service, we have stubbornly refused to talk about it at all. It makes no sense. It costs far too much money. It results in the further disability and death of our family members. In short, the price is too high to allow a few politicians to be able to use a few “hot button” words to convince us to drop the issue once again. This is one thing that needs to be on the American agenda.
