@Bacardi Doggo How dumb are you. Have you not read 1619. It is being pushed by the Marxist left. Placed in schools. According to 1619 we did not fight the revolutionary war to gain our freedom from the British. We fought the war so we could keep slaves etc.
@joan frederick Remembering history has nothing to do with creating a bust in support of a man who did so much harm. Everyone knows who Hitler is, how many busts do you see of him in their capitol? none.
There is a difference between teaching history and placing monuments in honor of men who were killing innocent people because of the amount of melanin in their skin. So, if you want to leave a bust up of NBF you should be just as proud to list all of his accomplishments of racial bigotry and tyranny underneath his plaque or bust.
*In April 1864, in what has been called “one of the bleakest, saddest events of American military history”, troops under Forrest’s command at the Battle of Fort Pillow massacred hundreds of troops, composed of black soldiers and white Tennessean Southern Loyalists fighting for the Union, who had already surrendered. Forrest was blamed for the slaughter in the Union press, and this news may have strengthened the North’s resolve to win the war. The slaughter was awful. Words cannot describe the scene. The poor black men would run up to our men fall upon their knees and with uplifted hands scream for mercy but they were ordered to their feet and then shot down. The white men fared but little better. Their fort turned out to be a great slaughter pen. Blood, human blood stood about in pools and brains could have been gathered up in any quantity. Forrest joined the Ku Klux Klan in 1867 (two years after its founding) and was elected its first Grand Wizard. The group was a loose collection of local factions throughout the former Confederacy that used violence and the threat of violence to maintain white control over the newly enfranchised former slaves. The Klan, with Forrest at the lead, suppressed voting rights of blacks in the South through violence and intimidation during the elections of 1868. Forrest in late life grew disillusioned with his racist ideology and ordered the KKK to disband. Sadly one cannot erase decades of hate and innocent lives murdered and tortured brutally with one tiny gesture before supposedly “meeting his maker”.*
A monument to this man is not remembering history it is glorifying who he was. Wrong Message!
