Kyrsten Sinema leaves Democratic Party and registers as independent | USA TODAY

Arizona Sen. Kyrsten Sinema cuts the margin in the U.S. Senate by leaving the Democratic Party and registering as an independent.

Arizona Sen. Kyrsten Sinema threw some cold water on Senate Democrats' celebration of a new 51-49 majority, leaving the party Friday and registering as an independent. On one hand, it seems as though not much will change. She told Politico she will not caucus with Republicans and told CNN she will keep her committee assignments.

"Becoming an independent won't change my work in the Senate," she told in the Arizona Republic, part of the USA TODAY network. Sinema would not say on CNN whether she would join the ranks of independent Sens. Angus King of Maine and Bernie Sanders of Vermont who caucus with Democrats.

But in keeping her committee assignments, she indicated her party switch to independent won't change the balance of power much – other than giving more political power to herself and swing Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia. On the other hand, it shakes up Washington and weakens Senate Democrats' newly acquired outright majority.

    1. Yes, John, what is it about voters in southern states? Maybe their thought are not in lock step with those of your own? Pls, do tell.

  1. Kyrsten Sinema did not get elected to her office campaigning as an Independent. She ran on a Democratic ticket, she swore her oath of office as a member of the Democrat party, not an independent party. Her voters did not elect her as an independent. Maybe if she had run as an independent she may have not been elected.

  2. Article I, section 5 of the United States Constitution provides that “Each House of Congress may determine the Rules of its proceedings, punish its members for disorderly behavior, and, with the concurrence of two-thirds, expel a member.” I am not any kind of expert on this matter, but I did not hear anything about the Senate approving her move or allowing her to keep her committee assignments as an Independent Senator. I feel that she can be challenged legally for deceiving the voters just to get into office as a Democrat because she could not win running as a Republican or Independent in her state, just as Joe Manchin did in West Virginia. Both of these party infiltrators gained their entrance through the side door. Hold them accountable for their disregard for what the majority of US Citizens say. As soon as they tricked their way into the office they slam the door on the people’s needs.
