The twenty-fifth amendment to the Constitution of the United States provides for Presidential succession in cases other than the death of a sitting President.
Typically, a President might surrender the office temporarily in an incident such as the assassination attempt against President Reagan, and later when Reagan had anaesthesia for colon cancer surgery, and I believe Clinton and W. Bush also used the twenty-fifth when they had colonoscopies or other procedures in which they would have been put under.
A more extreme example would have been when President Woodrow Wilson suffered a debilitating stroke; if the twenty-fifth had been in place at that time the Vice-President would have been sworn in, but as it was, the First Lady, Edith Wilson, began handling the President’s duties, reading his correspondence and reporting his reactions and decisions during much of the United States’ involvement in World War One.
There are provisions in the twenty-fifth amendment that provide for succession in the event that the President should become mentally unstable.
Again, the twenty-fifth amendment was not in place in 1965, when a journalist named Fletcher Knebel published the novel NIGHT OF CAMP DAVID, which proposed a fictional answer to the question: “WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF THE PRESIDENT OF THE U.S.A WENT STARK RAVING MAD?”
Keep in mind, this book was published fifty years before Trump announced his presidential campaign.
The parallels between Knebel’s novel and the real-life Trump administration echo the New York TIMES 1965 book review that pronounced the novel’s plot to be “…a little too plausible for comfort.”
