  1. My grandmother was short, dark, had thick long hair (not straight) with a round face and originated from the Portland mountain side. I was told long ago that she was maroon. Does that mean I am maroon too?

  2. In other sister islands in the Caribbean, the black people will tell you that they descended from the Tiano and Arawacks based on this same premise. Yes, prior to English conquest, the Spanish held Africans did mix with the indigenous and therefore most claim their land and heritage. However, the issue of Sovereignty is another matter. History must be corrected.

  3. Logic dictates if you fight for you land and win the land is yours, if you have to sign treaties with the enemy they recognise your sovereignty and your rights to the land, maroons are natives through their ancestors and acts of self defense and recognition. Many countries have states within states the UK is made up of England Scotland Northern Ireland and Wales, in the past they hated each other but recognise the others sovereignty.

  4. But I grew up learning that and I grow over learning from a long time because in my room is we have rights they might have rights is a different group of people I just said the man says a different group of people and they will government and then live in the bush so it’s a different group of people and you can’t take Grandma and sovereignty and you can’t do certain things you cannot treat Jamaica like a white man country have certain kind of certain kind of military you know me when people that fight people are fighting their rights that different world living alone right so they have to do if you have a free world less peace no fight so let’s wire and everything everything you would like to get up and everything will go all right the more peace we do better the more peace we do in more better in life and we all feel understand that

  5. They came from Africa during the Spanish occupation before British occupation in 1655 …how does this make them indigenous ?????
They mixed with some of the remaining Tainos, who survived the Spanish occupation , who taught them how to survive
Australia , Canada and United States committed serious devastating acts of genocide against indigenous peoples who existed before the colonisation by white Europeans is it any wonder

    1. You should go and study history Maroons war against the Spanish for 150 years and defeated them but your problem is that black people under rate black people

    1. How could Europeans give the name Maroon when the name exist in Africa long before Europeans came in contact with Maroon, a lot of you people are so brainwashed that you always trying to pic side with the oppressors

  6. This ladies strongest argument doesn’t show that the maroons are indigenous people. We don’t get to claim the rights of indigenous people if you cannot prove that you’re.

    1. The Maroons indigenous Status is recognized by the United Nations also Rastas and here you are talking bastid foolishness

  7. They taught al lot of nonsense in school in from way back, like teaching us about arawak only to relearn again that there was no arawak in Jamaica its tainos

  8. The maroons just want to distance them self from being called a Jamaican. Let’s face it no one wants to be a Jamaican they would change their nationality in an instant.

  9. Jamaica has always accepted the Maroons as indigenous people. The only reason we are having this conversation now is because Holness want the Maroon land to hand over to Noranda Bauxite to mine the land. Look around the cockpit how Noranda sucked what they could from the land and left the devastated land. Holness, leave the Maroon land alone. It’s not for you to mine. Show common decency and respect and stop bullying the helpless. You are Prime Minister because you call election during the covid lockdown and only a few people voted. Majority of Jamaicans heard about the election when it was over. Holness, you are not a trustworthy person. Leave the maroon land alone!!

  10. As a child grown in up my Dad tell all of his children all our life’s that he was from a group of people that was call maroons and they all was from Africa and he his a Africa dissent, my Dad was born Parish off Hanover ,my Dad Died at age 90,so it is True to the story

  11. What is the meaning of Jamaica if the slogan “land of wood and water belongs to the Arawak? Do you know that the majority of our population are autochthonous inhabitants? Do you know that until today we have regions on the island where Arawaks from other territories had ambassadors (leeward and windward Arawaks). Why the leeward and windward Arawaks have forgotten who they are today? Only a few people were brought to Xaymaca after the kidnapping of Arawaks and our dry soil and land. The crown land lease has expired and we are coming to reclaim our land and resources. Corporate Jamaica legal fraud conversion is not law. We the autochthonous people is the law of the dry soil and land. Your corporate birth certificate contract has lifted you off the dry soil and land. Hence Jamaicans are bankrupt indentured labourers with dead status. Arise and take your rightful place Arawaks!!!

  12. Why did you bring on this crazy lady to talk about dismantling Jamaica. The Maroons are not indigenous, period! By her definition all of Jamaica belongs to the Maroons. So tell this lady to get the hell off of the television.

  13. Jamaica has no problem with the Maroons. We love the Maroons and their ways of life. Until this silly guy Currie comes along asserting sovereignty, everything was good. Jamaica rejects that, that’s all.

  14. Deon, how are you going to have three people discussing such an issue without having dissenting voice? This is not good journalism. This is malpractice, shame on you.

  15. Host. Are you listening? These scholars are giving you the facts for you to tell THAT to the people. If the people don’t do the research, it’s just an opinion. These scholars gave fact. And just because you didn’t grow up with this knowledge, THAT speaks to miseducation. Appreciate the correct and FACTUAL information shared and long live The Maroons.
