@T D They had a system to do that. We don’t. Canada has a single branch of government, the house of representatives which holds all the power, and it can be attacked by the voters if they’re unhappy and replaced with new people. We have to overcome the non democratic senate and supreme court so changing things is near impossible. They call these checks and balances and we’re told they’re good things. They are not. If the will of the people in a democracy is not heard, eventually they will revolt.
@peter baxter You’ll have to argue with the constitution about that. The Supremes are nominated by the president, and either confirmed or not by Congress. The process is specified as the job of Congress in the constitution. There’s no direct “democratic” say by “the people.”
@peter baxter You clearly either are not Canadian or you don’t have a clue how the Canadian government works. Canada has four branches of government, the Crown, the Supreme Court, the House of Commons and the Senate. (There is no Canadian “House of Representatives” …. that’s American). We don’t vote for an all-powerful sovereign every four years. The American one rules by Executive Order Decree because the two legislatures cancel each other out, are in permanent gridlock and can’t make law, anymore. Our head of State has little (some) political power and Canadians vote for a Party, not a Leader. Currently, the party in power has a minority of the seats in the House of Commons and they stay in power by negotiating with other, smaller parties. The plug could be pulled n the current government at any time. It has not been as no one but the dimmest bulb wants to have a General Election during a world-wide natural disaster and anyway, the opposition has become so flimsy and weak that an election tomorrow would just give the government a majority, anyway. We can always kick the bums out and over the last half century, Canadians have fired their governments about every ten years.
