My Chinese cooking adventure | Encounters in China

Food author, Howie Southworth (USA) was posted to rural Liaoning Province to work as an English teacher in the 1990s. Out in the countryside he met Qu Feng, and they quickly became friends over their shared passion for food.

Qu Feng acted as Howie's guide to all the culinary delicacies China has to offer – they ventured through towns and villages to seek out new restaurants, and excitedly discuss what they found. Qu Feng even taught Howie how to make a few his favourite dishes – chief among them was scrambled egg and tomato, a staple of Chinese cuisine rarely seen on western menus.

After a year of teaching, Howie returned to the USA – but he regularly travelled to China, hooking up with Qu Feng and sampling the food in different regions. In 2012 Qu Feng visited Howie in the US. Together they decided to prepare a banquet of their favourite Chinese dishes for all of Howie's friends – a meal that charted their friendship through food.
