NYT Op-Ed: ‘You Want A Confederate Monument? My Body Is A Confederate Monument’ | MSNBC

Writer and poet Caroline Randall Williams joins Lawrence O’Donnell to discuss how her ancestry influenced her new piece in the New York Times, why it’s “fundamentally inaccurate” to refer to Confederate soldiers as American heroes, and how she’s “interested to see what it yields beyond” just taking down the monuments. Aired on 7/1/2020.

    5. How cruel it was when someone enslaved his own children.. and how it’s immortal when someone deny his blood relationship.

  1. They worship these traitors and salute the flag at the same time. Love her oped it is beautiful and on point.

  2. Is this the man in the WH’s way of Letting the NATION know he is going to continue to let the the U.S. down and disappointed? is this his way of helping Putin destroy AMERICA ? While Russia is killing U.S. Soldiers , Trump is deliberately letting the virus ravage the Nation and completely wipe out thousands of U.S. people? While Russia is killing U.S. Soldiers, Trump is slowing down testing and trying to eliminate healthcare while the virus death toll rises? Is he, McConnell, Barr and who knows who else is helping Russia destroy the Nation and it’s people? What is going to happen to our American before November and throughout January until he is out… if he doesn’t corrupt the election for him to win again ?

  3. Interesting choice of words by Trump in saying the painted words would “denigrate” Fifth Avenue.

    1. He is telling us he is racist loud and clear meanwhile the media gives him the benefit of the doubt

  4. this is refreshing to have an articulate writer instead of typical cable tv talking head, good interview

    1. @Troy McDaniel I am in no way defending General Robert E. Lee. He did know when to concede. He said erecting monuments in support of the confederacy would leave a gaping wound that will never go away. He tipped his hat to the Union army. These imbeciles that still in 2020 support this need a history lesson. Robert E. Lee saw first hand how unbelievably awful that war was.

    2. watch out for FALLING ROCKS from the White house……..you know?..

  5. Mitch McConnell says America is the most perfect union the World has ever seen, yet the reality is, it is the most politically and racially divided country the World has ever seen.

    1. It’s one of the most diverse countries, a cultural melting pot unlike most places in the rest of the world. A lot of that division is sewn by the media and it’s obsession with race. It’s easy to get along in homogeneous societies, but much more difficult in a place like America. Yet we make it work for the most part. The average American hates this division and doesn’t obsess over race. It’s a very vocal minority that want attention and pretend to be victims.

    2. @Cray Rubbish, the US is not particularly diverse. You are just a racist, white supremacist apologist.

    3. @PanglossDr First, let me say what a great pen name you have, in this best of all possible worlds.
Now, as to your comment, the U.S. actually is a very diverse country, with a couple of notable exceptions. It’s diverse because the various waves of immigrants, over the years, have gone through an assimilation process that takes a couple of generations. Irish have assimilated, eastern Europeans have assimilated, Italians have assimilated, and more recent arrivals are in process. With assimilation comes adoption by the larger society of foods, customs, etc. Just as one example of many, we take pizza for granted as an American food.
One of the notable exceptions is the African Americans, who have been consistently not permitted to assimilate. They’ve been singled out for exclusion from the benefits of being American. For example, FDR’s New Deal was set up to exclude benefits to domestic and agricultural workers, who are disproportionally black or minority. Also, the historical record demonstrates how many African Americans have been randomly murdered without cause or consequence. There have been so many lynchings that the word has entered our national vocabulary. George Lloyd is only the latest example. African Americans, I would imagine, long for the day when they would no longer have to “obsess over race.”
Another example is the Native Americans. European settlers denied the validity of Native American culture, and demanded that they “adopt our ways.” As far back as the early 17th century, the Pequot War was fought in New England between the Pequots and the colonists. Early Americans ethnically cleansed areas they wanted to settle, for instance by driving the native Americans on the “Trail of Tears” from the southeast to Oklahoma. People said “the only good Indian is a dead Indian.”
Cray, in his comment, didn’t exactly distinguish himself when he wrote about “vocal minorities that want attention and pretend to be victims.” He seems to want to take American diversity as the whole story, and to sweep what I call the “notable exceptions” under the rug.
I’ll call myself an “average American,” but what I hate is the “division” between those ethnic groups who are welcomed to assimilate, and those who aren’t.

    4. @Cray The United States is not the only multicultural nation in the World, yet it is the most deeply racially and politically divided, which is on display to the whole World. It’s not the media which is stoking this. It is you white supremacist dogs, who see yourselves as being better than everyone else. We see both sides of your media, and we also see and hear your political leaders. The very name ‘United States of America’ is a self contradiction, and a joke. America my friend, is the laughing stock of the World, and it’s people like you, who are the reason why. Thank you for the entertainment.

  6. I have never heard the confederate monuments defined so succinctly by a living by-product of the slave masters’ evil work. Hopefully, those that talk about their heritage would now look her in the eyes and understand Black people’s pain.

  7. What people should NEVER forget is that donald trump’s father was a KKK MEMBER. donald learned his racism from daddy.

  8. Caroline Randall Williams should be awarded a Pulitzer Prize. The “whitewash”, so to speak, has been exposed and put into perspective.
