‘Our World War’: Virus Response May Shape If Trump Loses 2020, Says Top Historian | MSNBC

As the coronavirus upends life in the U.S., a renowned Pulitzer Prize winning historian says the virus's impact on history and American politics is still wider than many may realize – rivaling World War II itself. Historian Doris Kearns Goodwin says "no other event in our lifetimes" since that war recalls comparable destruction, danger and dread, and just and like today's population living through this pandemic, the World War II generation "didn’t know how it was going to end.” That uncertainty stokes widespread fear, Goodwin tells MSNBC's Ari Melber, and makes it likely that the coronavirus and federal response will be crucial to the 2020 election. She also contrasts President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's emphasis on sacrifice with President Trump’s crisis response.

    1. @Drake Fire If he was and elite, nothing would have changed from Obama. He would have stolen just like the rest of them. I support a man who has the American people’s best interest at heart.

    2. @Drake FireYou make remarks because you are a stupid fool! Read about how the impeachment process works. The House votes on the articles of impeachment (the crimes). They call in witnesses and gather all the facts. Once that is done, they take that to the senate and the case is heard. Affidavits of all witnesses are submitted so no witnesses are called. Drunkard Pelosi failed to have them voted on, did not gather any facts to support the indictments, so the Senate threw it out. Trump let them talk to anyone they wanted. When it went into the senate, the House’s case was done. If they wanted to call in more witnesses, they should have done it before sending the impeachment documents to the Senate. Case Closed.

    3. @pbodymathis Meanwhile, as Trump steals from his own charity, while hiring immigrants and owning oversea’s sweatshops.

Trump has never put America first. Only himself.

  1. A reality tv host who was given $300 million, went bankrupt 6 times, married three times while cheating on all of them, afraid to disclose his taxes, impeached for selling out our democracy, a pathological liar with malignant narcissist disorder who also wants to bang his own daughter and finally, who is dumber than the dumbest person you know.
Not quite who you want leading the way during a generational crisis. 🤔😄😆

  2. Trump’s performance in the coronavirus pandemic is what we expect for a guy who declared bankruptcy 6 times
    – thanks to pockets of deplorables.

    1. Im a lefty, but even I can admit that Clinton is partly to blame for this as well. She was arrogant and dropped the ball badly in ’16 so many had no other choice to vote for Orange Julius. Thats fine if we live and learn. Problem is now they are pushing Biden who might be a little bit better but not by much. Dems, stop running TERRIBLE Candidates.

    2. @Moorstein H – No actually only a comma(or exclamation point) is needed as “look” is an interjection. Look, your fake news.

    3. it’s not a pandemic, that’s just fear-based media BS propaganda meant to manipulate the public, it’s a man-made virus google also “Bill Gates finances corona virus patent owned by Pirbright institute” wake-up people & stop repeating the media BS!!!!

    1. @queenstownswords Prohibition started in 1920 the depression started in late 1929. You’re not a historian. Try another field.

    2. @Kelvin Bergsten Yes. The dates do not line up right for prohibition. The point I am trying to make is with Cuomo’s stance on cannabis in New York and how (,if he were elected as he 46th,) it would translate on a national level.

    3. FDR’s Crimes
His contempt for the U.S. Constitution he was sworn to defend, in everything from creating a national welfare state to putting U.S. citizens in concentration camps, is almost a minor item on his ledger. So are his deceits in getting the United States into World War II, while assuring the American public that he was doing everything he could to keep us at peace.

Long before that war began, he befriended Joseph Stalin by granting diplomatic recognition to the Soviet Union, shortly after it had deliberately starved millions of Ukrainians. During the war, he made an alliance with Stalin, not as a regrettable necessity, but with effusive praise for “Uncle Joe.” He even urged Hollywood to make pro-Soviet films to dispel “prejudice” against Soviet Communism and lent a hand in the production of the egregious propaganda movie Mission to Moscow. (Jack Warner later called the film the worst mistake of his long career.)

As the war progressed, Roosevelt ordered the massive bombing of Japanese and German cities for the express purpose of killing as many civilians as possible. His victims, from Tokyo to Berlin, numbered in the millions. He was uninhibited by the ancient principle of Christian civilization that warfare should spare noncombatants.

But that wasn’t enough. Meanwhile Roosevelt launched the Manhattan Project to develop the atomic bomb, which could obliterate whole cities in a flash. He thereby took the world into a dreadful new era in history, which concerned him not at all.

Long after Pearl Harbor is forgotten, the name of Franklin Roosevelt should “live in infamy.” Yet the United States still officially honors him when an official apology to the entire human race would be more fitting. ~Joe Sobran

    4. @Dionysus your omission of facts and misinformation is startling. What about Pearl Harbor and the fact that Russia was well on their way to developing their own bomb?

    5. @Grover Marchand The Soviet atomic program during the war was puny compared to the Manhattan Project, involving approximately twenty physicists and only a small number of staff. They researched the reactions necessary to produce both atomic weapons and nuclear reactors. They also began exploring ways to generate enough pure uranium and graphite, and researched uranium isotope separation methods.
The Soviets successfully tested their first nuclear device, called RDS-1 or “First Lightning” (codenamed “Joe-1” by the United States), at Semipalatinsk on August 29, 1949.
WWII ended on Sep.2 ,1945.Trinity was the code name of the first detonation of a nuclear device. It was conducted by the United States Army at 5:29 a.m. on July 16, 1945, as part of the Manhattan Project.
four years before RUSSIA.you need help hull, you have TDS.

  3. These aren’t the old days buddy. You are dealing with a house of grimmlins and they have NO CONSCIOUS. Then and now are like night and day.

    1. I did not laugh, tears welled up, and I had a lump in my throat. that we once had such a great leader, and it has come to this orange sociopath buffoon.

    2. Wait, I was waiting for the climate change to take us out.
What a flock of sheep you democRats are!
      Fookin hilarious!
MAGA! MAGA! MAGA! MAGA! 2020 and beyond!
Can’t wait for Trump to go for a third term!

  4. If he was a ceo he would have been fired and removed and replaced by a competent person who would start fixing the problem.this is madness

  5. Rally around the medical professionals and their advice, not around Trump and his misinformation.

    1. @Ken White if you don’t want to deal with others like Pelosi and Deblasio that actively encouraged citizens to take steps that were detrimental to their well being, sounds as if you are the one so afflicted.

    2. But, but, but, Obama, Obama, Obama or Hillary, Hillary, Hillary, Hoax, Hoax, Hoax, Witch-hunt??? Pixza-gate,Obamas birth certificate. His taxes! 🤮🤮

    3. @Ryan Navas …The dead doctors, too, you brain dead, ignoramus? You are just too stupid to live. Sit down and shut your nasty, stinking, big pie hole.

  6. Testing is the first line defense of this virus and the best way to restart the economy

    Without testing we are ignorant

    1. Testing and social distancing 👍 stay safe, all. Too many crypto transmissions. Testing would be the only way to catch them.
It should be a matter of worldwide health, not money or we are all doomed. Eat the rich.

    2. You hit the nail on the head. If we tested everyone in December when trump knew about it, we would be at the bottom of the list of cases. United States of America, we are flying blind.

    3. And when you are finally able to get tested, wouldn’t it be swell if it didn’t take 8 days for the results to come back? Getting tested is worthless if you’ve got days to either keep spreading it, or die from it before you even know if you actually have it. Pence and Mother got their test results back in 3 HOURS. Yes, we know who’s important and it’s not your “ordinary” people.

    4. They don’t want widespread testing..the numbers would be too high for Trump’s reelection

    5. @Cindy Pomerleau uh….maybe it’s like this?

Baxter: Vax products contained bird flu virus
      by Calisha Myers | Mar 11, 2009 2:28pm

Deerfield, IL-based Baxter International has confirmed that vaccine shipments sent to subcontractors in Czech Republic, Slovenia and Germany were contaminated with live H5N1 avian flu viruses. The contaminated product, which Baxter calls “experimental virus material,” was a mix of H3N2 seasonal flu viruses and H5N1 viruses produced at the company’s research facility in Orth-Donau. The problem was discovered when ferrets inoculated with the experimental mix died. Baxter was notified on February 6, but has kept quiet about the details surrounding the mix-up, the Canadian Press reports.

“At this juncture we are confident in saying that public health and occupational risk is minimal at present,” medical officer Roberta Andraghetti said. “But what remains unanswered are the circumstances surrounding the incident in the Baxter facility in Orth-Donau.”

According to the Sun, Christopher Bona, said in an email that the release of the product was a result of a combination of “just the process itself, (and) technical and human error in this procedure” and the company has taken steps to make sure it doesn’t happen again. The Canadian Press reports that Bona has said that the contaminated product was not a vaccine and was developed for testing in animals only. Austrian authorities have audited operations at the facility and are satisfied with the corrective actions taken. Baxter has also worked with the subcontractors to help them destroy the contaminated products and clean up their facilities. Staff exposed to the products were offered Tamiflu and assessed by infectious disease doctors, the company tells the Canadian Press.

While H5N1 doesn’t easily infect humans, the H3N2 vaccine can. As the Sun points out, someone infected with both strains could serve as an incubator for reassortment, producing a hybrid virus able to transmit easily among people. But according to Andraghetti, there is no evidence reassortment occurred. “And we have no evidence of any increased transmissibility of the viruses that were involved in the experiment with the ferrets in the Czech Republic,” she added.

    1. @Richard Carpenter How much does that jew toad, George Soros, pay you to spew your anti-Trump propaganda on the internets?

  7. the difference today: we have trumpanzees running around destroying america.

    1. @Kent Horvath these people are brainless zombies, they repeat what they are told, don’t ask them any questions, they have no brain to think, thanks to msnBS

    2. Kent Horvath
the time for explaining things to trumpanzees is over. trash bags have more brains than trump supporters.
at this point, just round them up and put them down.

      💀death to maga💀

  8. TRUMP “No no I dont take any responsibility/ No this was obamas fault./ No this was the Medias fault/ This is all a hoax to get ME/ ME ME ME”…/I would give myself an A

    1. Remember when The president warned us about COVID-19 during his SOU address on feb 2nd and Pelosi sat behind him shaking her head, rolling her eyes, and pre-ripping the pages of his speech?
Remember how his placing a travel Ban on China because of COVID-19 in January and the Dems crying he was over reacting and “racism and xenophobia!” ?
I know you don’t, but most sane Americans will on voting day.
Enjoy 4 more years. You guys truly earned it.

    2. yeah, now it’s the states fault for not making enough medical supplies – “oh did China get my delivery of 18 tons of medical supplies?” Trump

    1. @pbodymathis I have a pal Dave Frazee Frazee lives in Thailand. I went in the service with him.
He tells me the crud is over there as well. I said scared and I’m not scared I’m just careful because I heard a terrible stat yesterday that of the people that go on the ventilators only 20% of them make it

    2. @Stephen Schmengle I understand Stephen and hopefully you will not get it. There is plenty to eat here in the small town of 35,000 we live in so the confinement is just laziness to me! Be safe and do what the CDC is telling us. Wear a mask and do not touch your face without washing your hands. Be safe.

    3. @Faithful Fearlessness AND YOU WIN THE PRIZE the most asinine comment I’ve ever seen or heard
      By far and away!!!

  9. “America will always do the right thing. Once it has exhausted every other possibility.” – Winston Churchill.

    1. @paghal11 WE all can say what we think could have happened if the US did not get involved. Take nothing away from the Russians for their fortitude in staying after the Germans with such losses but, would the Germans have stopped their counter offensive with the troops and equipment they had fighting the allies on the western front? We will never know.

    2. @David Woodbridge The UK never repaid those loans and for them holding the Germans at bay, yes they did but, with US material and pilots and fuel, and food, etc. I am not taking anything away from the Brits, they fought brilliantly and courageously but they could not have done it by themselves. Now the US was focused on the war in the Pacific more than they wanted to get into the European theatre. But it all worked out and everyone played as big of a role as they could. Oh by the way, Australia is the only ally that paid back their war debt to the US.

    3. @r mac “Not living in those times anymore”
Highly wrong, the estabilishment, or the power should we say, act every single time at the same way.
For that is said that “history repeat itself”.

    4. In America today if you want to do the right thing you have got get a bunch of Yahoo’s to turn off Fox News long enough for their brains to start working again…. Hmmmm I think it would be quicker just to build more coffins .

  10. Big difference is that the American people had Lincoln to guide them through the Civil War and FDR through WWII, we have Trump…

    We’re so screwed.

    1. Well ya Mario, yrs ago we had Regan for pres, & Bob Hope & Johnny Cash were still alive, now we got Bozo clown Trump as pres, but also now we got “No Hope or Cash.”

    2. but don’t forget that impeachedtrump has the excellent, experienced guidance of Putin at his disposal.

  11. Mass shootings and a pandemic, that is what this president legacy is, this generation is going to live through to wake up to an unprecedented
    DEFICIT thank you repuboicans
