Perfect Storm Of Rampant Covid Variant & Vaccine Reluctance Puts Michigan In Crisis | Rachel Maddow

  1. This is what happens when you politicize health issues. Thanks, Donald. Your legacy of death and chaos lives on, may you rot forever in your fancy nursing home.

    1. @frances simmonds The revenge of Donald Trump was getting liberals like you to inject themselves with poison. It’s his dream come true

    2. joe kim I take it you will not be taking the vaccine? All you maganuts are crazy. Keep on donating and not taking the vaccine and with luck your numbers will diminish.

    3. @frances simmonds trump poisioned you with operation warp speed. You took the hate bait. Now your vaxxed and soon to be controlled every aspect of your life. Trump is about revenge. He poisoned all liberals.

    4. @frances simmonds why would numbers of unvaxxed diminish? The covid survival rate is 99.999 percent. The people who messed with their genetics will be the ones who diminish

    1. @Nelson Hu Restrictions work everywhere when done properly ie border closures & contact tracing added into the mix in addition to any lockdowns

    2. @Me Here So in regards to the original post, what is your response? Instead of attacking others?????

    3. @Nelson Hu I’m not attacking, sorry if I came across that way, that wasn’t my intention, I was responding to what you said about contact tracing being effective in Australia/NZ but them being too far gone in the US & basically just saying, that all they need do is a lockdown first to sledge hammer “contact trace” lots of cases out of circulation & then back to what you’re saying, ie it works then.

You did a 5 day lockdown in that way over there, the US would need longer than 5 days, but principals are still the same, short lockdown while getting everything else happening for full containment & obviously they need to do state border closures too, WA’s proven how effective that is probably better than anywhere else! (and you still get freight in & out constantly despite your border closures, no reason they can’t use your model on how that’s made safe)

    4. @Me Here The US/Trump has tried to minimize the severity of the pandemic as a FLU. How is that working out? MAGA 😂

    5. Yes US prob has too many active cases for tracking but the UK & Brazil variants r especially deadly. Florida is 9ne state that has all 4 identified variants, they’re in big trouble.

  2. If people would just stay home for 2 weeks unless it’s dire like kidney dialysis and stop complaining about having their non-existent “Constitutional Rights and Freedoms” taken away — we would already be passed Covid!

    1. @B Money22
No, I don’t, because it never did. And while two weeks would not be nearly long enough (the OP is wrong) but many states never shut down, many put in weak restrictions and MANY people in those states IGNORED all of it! #1 among them was our “President”, who ENCOURAGED people to ignore public health advice! We never had anything close to a real lockdown.

    2. @Pat Doyle Using the media the narratives, BLM riots before Biden elected, then they disappear, no more cities burning, Captiol riots staged riots, then ALM too staged gun shootings trying to banned guns which Democrats want too do. All these distractions from Covid that was used against Trump pushed by the left, including cancel culture. What the left is crying about what law was passed in Georgia interferencing with MLB plans. Baseball is losing fans quickl ratings so low. The left has destoried sports and keeps pushing false racism around this country.

    3. @Me Here Hawaii DOES have mask wearing in place. At least around diamond head since mid December! Mask wearing has been *strongly* enforced and we have the lowest rate per capita in the US!

    4. @Pat Doyle I wasn’t stating 2 weeks from a scientific basis. I should have added mandatory mask wearing and easy access to testing — and encouragement for testing asymptomatic folks, as well. The point I was trying to get across is if people would simply follow proper protocol, we could have managed Covid more efficiently and effectively!

    1. It doesn’t work like that though, the non-vaxxers get innocent people sik too, including precious health care workers and other essential workers that we all need. We really need vaccination passports so we can keep the non-vaxers from venues where they could potentially be superspreaders, and I don’t care if that makes them feel like 2nd class citizens, because they have made their own bed by being inconsiderate of everyone else’s well-being.

    2. @Chris Snyder I don’t think that’s how it works either. If you’ve been fully vaccinated, there’s about a 95% chance you won’t get sick. The danger is that the virus will keep spreading & that eventually a variant will exist that makes this vaccine ineffective. But by then hopefully they will have a new vaccine to fight the new variant (like an annual flu shot). But yeah, it would be better if everybody would just go get vaccinated now. Then that would stop the virus dead in its tracks.

    3. @Lynn Turman If you are fully vaccinated with an mRNA (2 shot) vaccine, you’ve a 95% chance of not getting infected by the original strain of COVID-19 if you are exposed to it, but you can also get exposed to one of the new variants, in which case the vaccine is less effective at keeping you from getting infected with the new variant (for the worse case new variant the mRNA vaccines are about 50% effective). The one shot vaccines are less effective than the 2 shot vaccines at preventing infection with the original strain of COVID-19 (my Jansen vaccine is only about 60% effective), but by random chance there is at least one new variant that they are slightly more effective at preventing infection than are the 2-shot vaccines. This is why the recommendation is to keep wearing masks even after being vaccinated, because the vaccines are not complete protection against the new variants, and it benefits no one for those new variants to spread.

However, all of the vaccines are pretty good at keeping you from getting so sick with a new variant infection that you would end up in the hospital or die from it, so to that extent they are all at least partially effective against the new variants. But if we don’t try to eradicate COVID-19 entirely, it will just keep mutating into worse and worse variants, so it is really important for EVERYONE to get vaccinated, or at least those who don’t have an actual allergy to an ingredient in the vaccine. Of course, some people don’t care about the repercussions of their choices on others, they are not about to let the government tell them what to do, because FREE-DUMB!

  3. I live in Michigan and people here are stupid. I am getting my 2nd dose on Tuesday. My girlfriend is getting her 2nd dose the following week. We are having our first date since September, next week.

    1. Good job!! Im in Cali and I get my 2nd dose next week. I havent stepped foot inside a restaurant or bar of any kind for over a year!! But Im going to keep wearing my mask and stay out of crowds!! A friends bday is in early May but Im uncomfortable with doing anything indoors. We’ll see what happens with the overall numbers for the nation!! Stay tuned!!

    2. @Midnightspecia1 Following whose “orders?” Staying safe and using common sense!! Thats what we all need to be doing!!

    3. I got my vaccinations as soon as possible. Being 70, I was eligible in February. Utah is doing pretty good right now. A lower population and higher education level has helped.

    1. @Easy Money Ignore him, he’s a liar and a troll account. Look his account only created during the January Capitol Riot.

    2. Agreed The Jack! Really sad others aren’t identifying actions that could be taken to help more in the way Rachel is! If there was more of her, there’d be less of Rona!

  4. I’m in Delaware and every time any drug store says they have vaccines. They are out of them in less than an hour. Most all sates have some of their population that do not want the vaccine. Due to the misinformation and rumors that there are adverse reactions from the vaccine shots. More information equals less ignorance.

    1. and at this point, who cares? The priority needs to be protecting those that want to be protected! The rest can be dealt with later. You are completely right though, education fixes this problem, but surge vaccine into heavily impacted areas to protect those that want it as a priority!

    2. More info = less ignorance is true IN THEORY!! We have all the info in the world yet there are ppl in these very comments today trying to prove covid19 is a Hoax!! Sometimes ignorance is just ignorance. Cant save em if they dont WANT to be saved!!

    1. Vitamin d is the key so up in Michigan it’s cold everyone’s covered up it was already reported that northern states don’t do good they don’t have enough sunshine on their body 99% of all fatalities were vitamin d deficient

    2. Most of us in MI are still wearing masks whenever outside the house, but there are certain tasks that can’t be done with a mask on, and at more than a year out, the need for some of those tasks is getting urgent. It has been more than a year since I’ve had any dental care, and I’m trying to wait until at least my county is at herd immunity levels of vaccine, but it is still going to be a risky undertaking. Missing hair cutting and dining out are things that bother others, but I take those in stride.

    3. @Pat Doyle Yes the nurse was in the community! So many places that the site won’t even let me post my comment that lists them all as a single message, so here it is as 2 parts

      …..

    4. @Pat Doyle edit, phantom botted I think
& as for varied local responses contributing to higher transmission rate, no, each case has the same origins, hotel quarantine. We had a handful of breaches in these facilities over a period of nearly a year, then the new variants came into play & we had as many breaches in 2 months as we’d had in the previous 10 – and all while the facilities were operating at less than 50% capacity, due to concerns over the new variants! SO half the people, double the infections of the period 5 times longer.

This has been the only issue in Australia that’s lost people’s trust though & made them think the government is lying, cause despite that 10 times higher escape rate, once b117 gets into the community, it’s consistently a dud & does nothing, while any other breach spreads like wildfire! Add to that the fact that our restrictions in the community are now non-existent & life’s back to normal, whereas during earlier breaches into the community, social distancing & capacity limits were strongly in place & it’s pretty hard to convince Aussies that this variant is more infectious! The difference seems to be in how it’s aerosolising, while the others weren’t, so b117, if it decides to infect, is not stopped by anything & can infect mass numbers with ease, but it’s actual infectious period at that level seems to be very limited.

It is weird that it’s dominating in so many places, that tends to indicate more infectious, but we had the pre-cursor to b117 as one of the 2 variants that escaped quarantine to cause the Melbourne outbreak & the b117 precursor variant even in that setting burnt itself out & the other variant caused 90% of infections to the precursor b117’s 10% of total cases in Melbourne & no longer detected anywhere/extinct within 2 months of the 6 month lockdown

Everyone likes to blame b117, but we told you in July of last year that this is a winter virus & you can anticipate a horrendous winter if you continue managing it as you had been over summer. There was nothing unexpected in any surges there, same as it will be easing up on it’s own pretty soon, only to come back with avengeance as the weather cools again in 6 months time. There was HUGE changes in infectious levels from January to March 2020 & then again from March to May 2020. There’s been no significant change in infectious level, time from exposure to infectious or level of contact needed to get infected since May of last year, exception being the failure of PPE to impact spread in the way it used to, so increased spread in medical settings, without a corresponding increase in community transmission levels

    5. @Carlos Ramirez you have no idea what you are talking about misleading information is dangerous just stop

  5. I’m 63 and have already had both Pfizer vaccines and they were done in a hospital. Because all the things I get an allergic reaction to, both dish and laundry soaps, they had me wait for 20 minutes before I left. I had ZERO reactions.

    1. @Dmitri Telvanni – Some people take longer than two weeks to develop antibodies and some of these cases caught the virus before getting the second shot. When the virus is rampant through a community obviously some people will already have the virus or get it the same day as getting the second shot. This means they can get sick and still say “well I had both shots.”
This isn’t evidence that the vaccines do not work when there is mountains of evidence that they do.
I can literally explain to you in two sentences why this is happening. It’s not complex.

    2. @joe fran indeed they are.. based on a decade of research and previous vaccines for sars and mers. The alternative is millions dead.

  6. 🇨🇦 They started targeting high covid hot spots here in Toronto…. Finalky. Makes sense to me…

    1. It makes sense, but it is irritating to me here in Michigan. The reason being that our hardest hit areas right now also happen to be the Trumpiest areas – filled with anti mask anti-vax superspreader fools. I realize that there are a lot of people there who were not stupid, and don’t deserve to suffer, and that this is smart public health policy, but I was supposed to get my first dose last Wednesday, but got an email saying that my appointment was cancelled because a large amount of the vaccine our area had expected to get was diverted. Now they say I might have to wait until sometime in May.

    2. @Pat Doyle 100% this. I’m not American but if you start “rewarding” covid hot spots with the vaccine over areas actually following covid guild lines – you’ll have people going out of their way to inflate covid numbers to get their aarea vaccines. Sound crazy? Yes. Sound American in 2021? Definately.

    3. @Unverified Lies
Agreed. As bad as things are in Michigan, in terms of raw numbers, North Dakota, which has done NOTHING to try to contain this is the worst per capita, and we are number 41 in cases per capita. They did not even start to get any serious outbreak until five months after we did, and they still have managed over 137,000 cases per million people compared to our about 81,000, despite us being one of the first and worst hit states. Why surge vaccines there? Especially when I’ll bet half of them won’t take them.

  7. Population 4-5 thousand, where I live, in Michigan. Go into the gas station to pay for gas and 4 people not wearing masks. Workers have masks around their necks and not on faces. Drive by local bar and parking lots are full, outdoor dining area is empty. Looks like we will have another quiet summer.

    1. @NiNi J The local authorities there are in the militias who are planning to kidnap the governor, so they can Yell at Her!!!

    2. We’ve pretty much crushed it here but when I go out all adults have masks on. Better than another lockdown.

    3. @spymaine89 1. That quote isn’t even in that document. It ACTUALLY said that at the time this study was conducted, the CDC couldn’t directly access a REAL SAMPLE of the virus, instead having to use a TRANSCRIBED VERSION OF ITS RNA, mixed with a couple of other ingredients that performing this viral test would involve.
“Since no quantified virus isolates of the 2019-nCoV *were available for CDC use at the time the test was developed and this study conducted,* assays designed for detection of the 2019-nCoV RNA *were tested with characterized stocks of in vitro transcribed full length RNA* (N gene; GenBank accession: MN908947.2) of known titer (RNA copies/μL) spiked into a *diluent consisting of a suspension of human A549 cells* and viral transport medium (VTM) *to mimic clinical specimen.* “
You just COMPLETELY LIED about what was in that document, on purpose, just to make yourself seem less stupid. It backfired.

      2. That section of the document was about the FDA developing a test and then studying its results, trying to see how small the amount of virus could get before the test was rendered ineffective. It wasn’t remotely to do with your claim that “THE CDC HAS NO VIRUS.”
      3. Stop pretending that you can actually read because you’ve just proven to me that you can’t do it very well

    4. @spymaine89 I think U are misreading the science. SARS/covid has been around for years (which was why they were able to synthesise a vaccine so quickly). Covid19 was just the 2019 version of SARS.

    5. @Jeff McDonald “mind your business mask NAZI” is so damned funny to me. You’re screeching like a banshee just because people are saying that you need to cover your nose and mouth when you’re in public. It’s just so tragic, I feel so bad for you, you poor thing😭😭😭

  8. Go to a store in the UP and 30-40% of folks are not masked or not properly masked. Noses hanging out everywhere. The stupidity is rampant.

    1. The stupidity in these comments is mind blowing. Stupid people used to know enough to sit down and let the smart ones steer the ship.

    2. @Dmitri Telvanni that is very interesting. Do u no if they were variant strains? Did they get sick? I have my own questions about the vaccines & blood clots.

  9. I live in Michigan, we have a “certain element” in this state that STILL refuse to wear masks(or wear masks PROPERLY), because they think covid-19 is no worse than the flu.
They also rail against this affront to !THEIR RIGHTS! to have a mask mandate n place.
We seem to have an inordinate amount of dumdums, per capita, than any other state.
It’s sad how selfish and shortsighted people are.

It’s costing lives, every single day.

    1. @Me Here the state I live in the vaccine and the people’s need for the vaccine has flowed to almost to crawl they’ve already shut down several vaccination centers

    1. I feel back for the grocery clerks and such as well. The Privilege and Pride in this country will be our downfall

    2. I work at one of the largest hospitals in the Midwest and our emergency room has seen little if any difference any normal year

    3. Yeah people come in come in paranoid wondering if they’ve got it 2 hours later they’re on their way home

  10. I live in N. Michigan and have been fully vaccinated for at least a couple weeks.
From what I can see every Mi. adult is now eligible.
Unfortunately for most of my Trumplodyte friends that think the virus is a hoax have all been infected and suffer from some malaise or other.
Even so, I still conduct myself as if I have not been vaccinated due to the prospect that those who refuse to comply will only cause the virus to repeatedly mutate, eventually into a highly lethal form, rendering the vaccine all but useless.

    1. Just a reminder if your vaccinated you still can become ill just like with a flu shot.
Your chances of death of severe illness is greatly reduced with this vaccine.
I believe it is a smart idea to continue wearing masks, it is easy and does help.

    2. Big Daddy…. Ive only had my first shot sofar, but a friend invited me to a party last night. No masks required. The guy throwing it works in law enforcement and refused the vaccine. He also had covid over the summer. I made up an excuse not to go but there are dummies everywhere!! I got 17 text messages as to why I wasnt coming!! IM KOO!! 🤣😷 Imma keep this mask on and stay out of crowds as long as I can!! Youre doing it RIGHT!! 💯🤩👌🏽

    3. I absolutely agree with you. As I tell anyone I talk to, using the boxing referee warning: “Protect yourself at ALL times.”
