When bus drivers are in the hospital because they’ve been infected with the virus, are kids going to drive themselves to school? And exactly how do you practice social distancing on a school bus?
It would be cheaper and safer to supply every child with a tablet so they can E-learn from home.
Every parent in my community is homeschooling during the COVID crisis…. because it’s better to take temporary countermeasures, than send an entire generation of children to be killed by COVID. I wish politicians would stop using kids as political pawns.

Betsy DeVos did a lot of mental gymnastics on the Sunday talk shows to argue that it’s ok for the Federal Government to demand schools open fully while at the same time, passing the buck to the local districts to deal with the afternath of potential outbreaks.

The states need money and I bet they’re not going to get it! I’d tell Trump to stick it and do remote learning!
Janie Buck: Yes. Old abandoned schools could have been refurbished and be opened. Substitute teachers needing work would have no trouble finding it. If they are going to be full-time teachers for a semester, then they should be paid like full-time teachers and get the same benefits if they don’t already have them to encourage them to get back into the profession full time. That would have cost a lot of money, but would have been counterbalanced by parents being able to go back to work (assuming there had been a plan in place for that too) and needing less child care, fewer unemployment benefits from the Treasury. We have had months to get ready for this, but again, no national strategy and guidelines to determine which districts can cope on their own (because there is no outbreak there) and which would need to remake the system, supported not just by the bureaucrats and experts, but by the politicians on both sides of the aisle. As usual, Republicans want services but don’t want government to pay for them because that would require raising taxes on millionaires. Republican politicians are mostly millionaires themselves (as well as a bunch of Democrats, but it doesn’t stop the rich Dems from wanting to raise taxes on themselves), and convince their followers that they are just one more tax cut for the rich away from becoming rich themselves. It’s such a good line to use in a country where the only thing that counts any more is how much money you have, that people are desperate to believe in trickle down economics, even when four tax cuts later, they are no better off, but the already rich are much better off.
i would image that before a student enters the classroom the parents will have to sign a waiver which explains that they will not bring a lawsuit against the governor, state, federal government or the school board if the child gets ill while attending classes. mark my words, they will propose this waiver.
