REDEVELOPMENT OF NEW MODERN DOMINICA GRAMMAR SCHOOL PROGRESSING WELL

Roseau, Dominica – February 18, 2008……… Work on the redevelopment of the new modern Dominica Grammar School is progressing satisfactorily.

 

phase_ii_dgs_feb_2008.jpgWork is now ongoing on Phase II of the redevelopment of the Dominica Grammar School. The cost of this phase is $3.5 million ECD.

 

On Wednesday, February 13, 2008, Hon. Vince Henderson and technical staff from the Ministries of Education, Human Resource Development, Sports and Youth Affairs and Public Works and Infrastructural Development conducted a site visit to the Dominica Grammar School Development Project.  

hon_vince_henderson_and_official_at_dgs_site_feb_2008.jpgPhase II or Block 5 which  will comprise  a basement, a first and second floor will house  the following: building technology lab; auto mechanic lab; maintenance workshop; electrical workshop; agricultural science lab; biology lab; chemistry lab; physics lab; clothing and textile lab; food and nutrition lab and classrooms.

 

Work on Phase I was completed in March 2006 at a cost of  $2.5 million ECD. Thirteen new classrooms were built. Work on Phase II began in July, 2007.

 

Currently fifty people are employed on the project while another ten are expected to be employed within days.

According to Education Minister, Hon. Vince Henderson, Phase II of the redevelopment of the School will be completed by June 2008 while Phase III will commence before the end of the current financial year.

 

Upon completion of all six phases by 2010, it is anticipated that the new Dominica Grammar school will be the most modern secondary school in the entire country.

 

Subsequent phases of the new Dominica Grammar School will include an auditorium, an administrative bloc, a computer centre, counselling rooms among other amenities. Upon completion the new School will be able to accommodate well over 1000 students.

 

The redevelopment of the Dominica Grammar School is one of the four-pillar projects, the Government of China agreed to finance when the two countries established diplomatic relations in March of 2004.  (Ends)
