You dont want to waste a long range system like Patriot on these lawnmower drones, but rather cruise missiles and ballistic missiles or even the bombers russia uses to launch the cruise missiles from just over the border. Drones are best taken down by short range GBAD or old fashion AA guns like the German Gepard.

Cost per salvo, should be taken into account. IMHO Germany’s Rheinmetall has more interesting anti-drone tech in that respect. You will never win long-term if you have to pay 2M USD to down something that costs 0.02M USD to manufacture. Just saying.

A Patriot missile costs $3 million and there is a limited supply, an Iranian Drone costs $20,000. So one Patriot missile equals 150 Iranian drones

The big questions over Ukraine are rapidly evolving into; How degraded are the european economies going to be allowed to become and just how much NATO’s millitary resources are going to be allow to degrade by the immature, egoistic fanatics that are currently running the majority of western nations. The patriot system will be most effective against those missiles that Iran is about to start shipping to Russia (although I would prefer to see those ships finding their way to the bottom of the sea). I could be wrong, but based on the level of ingenuity we’ve been seeing lately in Ukraine, I would think they will soon find a more effective way of dealing with those gas powered noise makers.

Phased Array Tracking Radar to Intercept On Target (PATRIOT)
PA radar works by steering the radar beams electronically. It can search much faster and more accurately than the old mechanically steered radar. I worked on these systems for decades. And made possible because of US advanced computer industry.
I hope the radar can detect and then shift target data to another weapon.

So effectively patriot missiles can’t protect all of Ukraine but only a few strategic locations even then it is very expensive. So not many can be deployed. Further it would be waste to use against drones considering the cost. So USA should find cheaper options.
Here are the Israeli intelligence data for November 2022:
Russia’s losses: 19 planes, 51 helicopters, 96 unmanned aerial vehicles, 813 tanks and armored vehicles, 398 artillery pieces, 9 anti–aircraft systems, 15,780 killed, 32,700 wounded, (plus DNR and LNR – 6000 killed, 20,000 wounded)
Ukraine’s losses: 287 aircraft, 199 helicopters, 2,360 unmanned aerial vehicles, 5,865 tanks and armored vehicles, 6,368 artillery pieces, 442 anti-aircraft systems, 131,000 dead, 193,000 wounded (plus 4,020 dead mercenaries, 174 dead NATO officers).
Now Ukraine is losing 300 killed and 700 wounded every day. This is 7 thousand per week, or 28 thousand losses per month. In a year, the Ukrainian army will be gone. The Hymers will have to be loaded by NATO instructors. But I don’t think that the losses among them will be less. It’s time to end this belligerent madness.

Ukraine needs goalkeepers and the like. track and shoot down drones and missiles to protect nuclear plants and important infrastructure, without depleting the amount of patriots.

This system wouldn’t be particularly effective against Russian cruise and quasi ballistic missiles (it would further discredit Patriot after its poor performance in SA). 2 . It would have to be operated by American servicemen in large numbers basically on a suicide mission. It would be a colossal mission creep. 3 Many more medium and short-range air-defense systems should be sent simultaneously just to protect Patriot system (a sitting duck without this multilayer protection). They also should be operated by numerous American military personnel. 4. It would mean to all intents and purposes the beginning of WW3
