The U.S. should have “truth in journalism” laws like civilized countries do.
It used to have what’s called the Fairness Doctrine, but was abolished in the 80s for reasons that it was in opposition to the 1st amendment. There have been debates for reinstating it in some form since.

For the life of me, I cannot comprehend how so few of these serious allegations get challenged in a COURT OF LAW! Surely there must be some way of having at least some of those allegations put to the test, and if found to be baseless and defamatory or otherwise harmful, then whoever has been making (or spreading) such allegations gets held accountable. Isn’t that the whole point of having laws against defamation, hate speech, libel, credible threat, incitement to violence, or other forms of harmful speech???
If there’s any lesson to be learned from past waves of lynchings, pogroms, inquisitions and witch trials, it’s that such false allegations can spread like wildfire among the intellectually vulnerable and the fearful masses if left unchallenged and unchecked.
