@Matt Dillon — A) The US already gets more electricity from renewable sources (hydro, wind, solar, geothermal) than it does from coal, which has been on the decline for ages. If use of renewable sources was merely tripled, that would eliminate coal and cut natural gas use in half. B) Lithium for Li-ion batteries is not mined with big machines. It comes from lithium-rich hot springs and simply evaporated out.

@Maryanne Slater your assuming a lot. The range Rover I had a few years ago had a 33 gallon tank and got 8 miles to the gallon and only ran on premium gas.
That car would only last me maybe a week to and from work nowhere else. Where is my Honda Accord which had a 12.3 gallon fuel tank and got 24 miles per gallon of gas and ran on regular. Would only last about a week, week and a half with regular driving.
The type of vehicle you own and you’re driving habits will greatly dictate how your fuel is spent. If you have an EVand you spend most of your trips in City charging at each stop you can go on almost infinitely as long as you have a source of energy. Gasoline diesel engines on the other hand increase efficiency as you speed up so on highway speeds you can actually get more mileage.
And as far as the power grid goes. As long as your power grid is well maintained you shouldn’t have to worry about power outages, but things happen.
