I think the only reason Trump announced his candidacy is because he knows indictment is imminent and is desperately hoping that being a candidate will offer him a basis to claim the indictment is politically motivated. As Michael Cohen said, his announcement binds him to campaign finance laws and makes it much harder to use donations for his personal expenses.

I wish I had your optimism. I don’t think Trump will be indicted and will face no consequences for ANY of his actions. And I also don’t think his taxes will ever be released – at least not as long as he’s alive and able to keep playing the judicial system the same way he plays the tax system.
I think that what he does is always governed by the rules of his illness, he would rather have people saying bad things about him than to be ignored…….bad breath is better than no breath at all.
