There’s not really anything he can do about it. The Chief Justice’s constitutional role in impeachment trials is very limited. The primary reason they preside over impeachment trials is to fill the Vice President’s Senate position to prevent conflicts of interest. They also, make legal rulings when asked but any such ruling can be overturned with a majority vote of the Senate. If the eventual vote over witnesses ends up tied, the CJ would get the tie breaking vote. That would be about the only thing useful he could do.
