Thomas Tully I hope I’m not sounding unkind but your reply is not good. First of all, it’s inaccurate. COVID-19 is way more deadly than the flu. I just want you to mull some figures over before you reply. The “season” of flu runs from approximately late October through late April so six months. 2018-2019 was considered a mild flu season. 16.9 million people got sick enough to seek medical help but there were slightly less than 500,000 hospitalizations and 34, 200 people died of flu or flu-associated illnesses. during that 6 month periiod. 2017-2018 was a pretty bad flu season. 21 million went to a medical provider, 810,000 were hospitalized, and 61,000 died of flu or flu-related disease during that six-month season.
I didn’t start keeping record of the death stats from COVID-19 until early April. On April 6 there were 9653 deaths in the US from COVID-19. There are now 119,000. That’s 110,000 deaths in 84 days, less than half the time of the flu season. And, keep in mind, most of us were seriously following mitigation rules for the first 60 days of that time. In other words, 119,000 people have died despite the majority of the country self-quarantining.
Most of us do want to have more in our lives than we’ve had these past few months. I’m retired so besides spending time with my family and dogs which I have been able to do, I like to go to the movies and take daily yoga classes. I was ecstatic when we could begin taking outside yoga classes starting a month ago and this week the studios were re-opening with new safety measures in place. Now I’m ready for the movie houses to reopen. I know for a lot of people the restaurants and bars reopening were the big thing.
Now I am going to ask you to wrap your head around this. The entire world is just beginning to recover from lockdowns and thousands of large gatherings have been either postponed or (in most cases) cancelled for this year; this morning it was announced even the hajj has been cancelled this year for the first time in history. There have been only two large inside gatherings in the US, probably in the industrialized world, and maybe in the entire world. Both of those are rallies organized by our president Two times a large center was half-filled with mostly unmasked participants in the middle of a pandemic (and amazingly, in two hot spots). Here is where I’d really like to hear what you have to say. Why did these debacles take place

Yes, and Obama knew a pandemic was not just likely, but inevitable. Obama had a 612 million dollar fund to replenish the PPE stockpile (He asked for 629 million.) Obama used up the stockpile because of H1N1 and Ebola outbreaks.(He took the severe warnings from the WHO and the CDC seriously.) Had he not done that it could very likely have been two pandemics instead of two epidemics. He knew he had to send a ton of PPE to West Africa to keep it from coming to the U.S. And, that he did. Also with H1N1 as well. He went way before any warnings to send PPE equipment to hospitals, clinics, etc. Obama knew it was depleted. Even though he was at the end of his presidency, he fought to make sure Trump and his administration would have the stockpile they needed, along with a 69 page playbook with entire blueprint should a global pandemic happen. Trump denied it existed, and later, when the playbook was brought straight to him, Trump said it was “outdated.” Trump thought Obama and the pandemic was a joke, ridiculous, a hoax, and literally, when asked why he disbanded the pandemic infrastructure, Trump said, “I’m a business man. This was a bad business deal.” When asked later, when the pandemic first hit the U.S, he lied and said, “I didn’t do it. I don’t know anything about it.” (All videos from press conferences on the white house lawn prove this.) Trump never replenished that stockpile and then went on to say, “The cupboards were bare. Obama left me with nothing.” Have you seen Obama’s speech in 2014 about this inevitable pandemic? You can find it easily enough.
