My understanding is that Nixon came up with some legal or constitutional-based (but highly bogus) argument to defend what he had done, post hoc (after the facts). It was not a theory or argument he advanced prior to his dirty tricks, and so it could not have ” cost a president’s head.”
If Nixon had Fox News when he was around he likely would have been able to get away with what he did.
