Socialism: ” political and economic theory of social organization which advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole.” Owned or regulated is the key concept. Who in the US , 2020 wants to be rid of community regulation? Aside from the Koch family, that is, and others like them.
The number of “socialist” policies in the US should cause the heads of Arch Conservatives to explode. But it doesn’t. That is because there are NO Capitalist economies around the globe. No socialist ones either. Russia? No. China? No. The argument in the US is about stoking fear of your opponent, suggesting taxation should be a tool to provide support to the less fortunate in American society. Socialism! Shriek! There goes your Government funded old age pension!
There are many differences between socialism and communism, the main one being the compulsory nature of communism. There is no possible democratic communism, as the state must have absolute power, but there are many fine examples of democratic socialism.
@Jon Nelson No Again! “Socialism means government ownership of the means of production which translates to no private property.”. In a communist state the State must own the means of production, In a socialist State the government may “regulate” private behaviour. The aim of the socialist state is the fairer distribution of wealth to ALL its citizens. Wealth disparity is a huge problem in the US at the moment for this very reason. The rich get richer, the poor get poorer and the middle class disappears.

Alexander Craig Well you are the first one who has provided an alternate definition of Socialism. You have to admit that my definition is a subset of yours and is probably an older one. If I accept your definition which includes regulation by the community as a whole then ( if you accept laws as a form of regulation ) there is either only two types of economic systems. Capitalism which is authoritarian and all other types which are Socialism. The reason for this is “regulation by the community as a whole”. An argument could be made that there are no human organizations which are regulated by the community as a whole. My original argument was against the notion that democratic ideas are Socialist. By your definition the only way not to be Socialist is to be authoritarian. So what are the Cubans running away from if it is not authoritarianism?

Second, Trump has put out troops out of the middle east, betraying his allies and gaining nothing. Next point, I read some of your early comments: You critizised America for their 190 000 Covid deaths. That are Trump`s deaths, not that of the democrats. So that fact should be a reason to vote for Biden, at least that would be logic.
And this leads me to the last point. It is Trump`s presidency now, he can`t obviously handle these riots. On the contrary, all he is doing prolongs the riots, makes even more people so angry that they feel they must join in. All happens on his watch, not Biden`s.
You think Americans need a dictator? Shame on you,. go back to Cuba if you feel in need of a dictator (even if Raul seems actually “weak” in comparison) or try out Venezuela. The tough guys in Columbia didn`t achieve that much either in their war on crime and communists,.

@Richard Wright I am aware of that…Any country that speaks spanish has some level of spanish blood running through their veins……or adapted the Spanish language through Colonization. No one spoke Spanish in the New World until the arrival of the Spanish Conquistadores. Another example is Brazil whose indigenous people never spoke Portuguese until the arrival of the Portuguese Conquistadores.

A lot of Latinos and others believe trump when he says he’s pro-life – he will say anything to get re-elected, for some voters this is what will sway their vote, even though he is well known to be a LIAR!
I grew up with some Cuban friends, and I was always amazed at how well they assimilated into everyday life. Since I’m opposed to Trump, I am saddened to know that they’re leaning into supporting a man who has no idea of their history, either in Cuba or here, and doesn’t care a whit about their values and vision.

I have the pulse of the community in that regard and my family in S. Florida are also well known and not supportive of these politics. The RePUGliKLAN Cuban base does exist, but it is a dwindling aging demographic. They don’t wield the same power they did from the 60’s until the 90’s.
