It is only very recently that even a tiny percent of conservative politicians have argued that sentencing as many people as possible to as long a sentence as possible is not a good thing. For decades to be the “tough on crime” party conservatives touted policies that would put as many people behind bars for years for nonviolent offenses that wound up giving us the largest prison population on earth, over 1/5th of the entire global prison population.
